Intro:
GOOOOOOALLLLL!!! Many of you have probably heard this if you’ve been near or heard of soccer. Originally, I had not taken surveys for the World Cup. So by a number of hands, how many of you have heard of the World Cup? I’ll be informing you all a little more knowledge about one of the biggest competitions in the world. (Change) I’ll be teaching you all about the history of the World Cup, awards given during the competition, and about the next World Cup.

First, we will be discussing the history of the FIFA World Cup. FIFA stands for Federation Internationale de Football Association. * The World Cup began back in 1930 in Uruguay and only consisted of 13 teams. * Out of those 13 teams, 7 were from South America, four from Europe, and 2 North American teams. * Henry Winter states in his article that many European nations didn’t want to participate because of the length of time to Uruguay and the fear of losing their jobs. * The W.C. occurs every 4 years and destination changes every time. * There have been a total of 19 World Cups, the most recent in South Africa where Spain won its first W.C. * Stan Collymore states the country that has won the World Cup the most times is Brazil, by winning the W.C. 5 times and running up twice. The second nation would be Italy, by winning 4 times and running up twice. The third is Germany by winning 3 times and running up 4 times. * The U.S. has hosted the W.C. once in 1994. * Matches were held in 9 different cities * They were in Detroit, San Francisco, New York City, Orlando, Chicago, Dallas, Boston, and Washington D.C.
Now that we’ve gone over some of the history, let’s talk about awards that are won.

    The first event was held in China in 1991 with an average of 20,000 fans per game (Litterer 7). In the first World Cup, they did not let the women play ninety minutes, instead they were only allowed to play eighty. The tournament had three groups. The top two teams from each group and the best two third place teams overall would advance in the tournament. Group A contained China, Norway, Denmark, and New Zealand. China, Norway, and Denmark advanced. Group B consisted of the United States, Brazil, Japan, and Sweden. Both the United States and Sweden advanced. Finally group C contained Germany, Italy, Nigeria, and Chinese Taipei. With Germany, Italy, and Chinese Taipei advancing. In the semifinals, the United States beat Germany with a score of 5-2, with the five goals score by April Heinrichs and Carin Jennings. Sweden and Norway played next with Norway winning 4-1, bringing then into the finals. The United States and Norway have always disliked each other, they had played seven times leading up to this match. The United States won three and lost four of the matches. The match did not disappoint, in the first twenty minutes Michelle Akers scored giving the U.S. the lead. At halftime, the game was tied one to one. In the last two minutes.     Soccer outside the United States and Canada, the game of soccer is called football. Soccer is the world’s most popular game, with the best players meeting every four years to compete for the World Cup. It is bigger than baseball, American football and basketball combined. Statistics showed that a global television audience of 49 billion people tuned in to watch the 2002 World Cup (FIFA.com “Pure Football” pg.1). The World Cup is held every four years, hosted by a different country each time. During the four years in between the event, the president and council of FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) unite to have a lottery on who’s going to be the next nation to host this prestigious event; and in so, even the president of the country has to be present if they are to win this lottery. The first World Cup was opened at the Centenary Stadium in Montevideo, Uruguay on 18 July, 1930. Every year, eager fans throughout the world wait for World Cup qualifying rounds. Soccer fans are known for their craziness and extreme devotion to their favorite teams.
