Work experience in a nursery review

Unit 6
Work experience review week 1
On the first two days of my work experience I was quite new to things and had to explore around for me to know where things were in order for me to adapt into the environment. I didn’t really do much on the first day apart from get to know all the children and staff. However during one point in the morning I helped the room leader with carrying some snacks for the children from the kitchen. Every morning that whole week I helped out with feeding the children that needed to in the morning, lunch and afternoon. My personal achievements that whole week was remembering most of the children’s name as I tried hard to not forget any and I started to have a good relationship with some of the children and they listened to what I told them to do which showed me I was doing the right thing. After the first day my main duties began to become regular, I had to prepare activities, sing with the children during circle time and clean up the creative room after it was being used. I was mainly in the creative room rather than the main room, the children got separated to go into different rooms as having them all in one room was difficult to control them. In the creative room they would do creative activities for example painting or gluing things down. The first 2 days I was in the main room where the children had to practice literacy maths or play games.
Every morning I use to help the team leader lay things on each table for example pens and paper or counting blocks. After the children had their lunch then we would have circle time where the children sat around in a circle and had to sing songs. I mostly had a child on my lap every day, I tried to get the shy kids to join in and would sit next to them so they don’t feel alone or not involved. Every day in the first week in the afternoon from 3-5pm the children had to rehearse for their Christmas concert which was going to take place next week on a Friday. Me and staff members

My work placements as a whole were somewhat diverse, in terms of age group, setting, profession and both group and individual requirements. My first work placement was at Kingswood Primary School - supporting and assisting Year 3 pupils (7-8 years old) with their learning, my second work placement I was able to also assist and give care to elderly individuals in The Dulwich Care Home. My finally work placement was in another school named Christ Church Primary School - mainly supporting and giving assistance to 'under achievers' and those who required special needs.…

I did not design the lunch menu for my center; however, I serve it to my children on a daily basis. We use the CRMC food service, which has many benefits. One positive aspect is that there is no extra cost to the center, and enough food is delivered daily so that each child is served the appropriate proportions. My center works with the hospital to create a “short cycle menu,” a menu that is different everyday and repeats itself after a certain number of days, specifically a one-week cycle menu that is chosen by our director with faculty input. This cycle menu shows strengths because the children seem to enjoy a shorter cycle of fewer foods, and our director is able to control the menu to ensure that quality foods are served. The food served each day includes the food groups required for a balanced diet with whole milk. None of the meals contain potential choking hazards and all food is cut with food scissors for my age group. Each month, our center updates our allergy alert sheet, which is posted in every classroom. The staff complies to each child’s needs everyday at lunch and snack. I would not change my centers lunch menu because it promotes a healthy diet, meets their nutritional needs, and the children like it.…

I recently left a position at a small Early Childhood Education center in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school consisted of children ranging in age of 6 weeks to 6 years. I worked there for eleven years in a variety of age groups. Most of my experience was in Preschool, with children who were three and four years old. The school was located in Point Park University located in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, in one of the University’s dorm buildings and took up two floors. Each classroom was between three and four dorm rooms combined in size. The rooms were long and narrow with partial walls knocked down and converted into doorways between the rooms. Because of the classrooms being converted from individual dorm rooms to single classrooms, there were many blind spots in the room. There for, each classroom had at least two teachers spread out among the room to be able to see every child and what they were doing at all times. It was very rare that there were only two teachers per class. Many times, the classroom had two teachers, and students from the university enrolled in a work study program helping to work with fifteen to twenty students.…

D2: It is important when working within a childcare setting that your timekeeping and attendance is up to scratch, punctuality is key because within this type of setting as a practitioner you have a multitude of responsibilities to carry out in order to help the child to thrive and develop. In addition to this it is also mandatory to have good punctuality because many people will be relying on you within that setting, For example if you’re not on time and it is your duty to set up for an activity then another member of staff will have to undertake that duty, as a result other members of staff will dub you as being unreliable and incompetent. As well as punctuality it is also imperative that you maintain a good attitude to work whilst in the establishment as this shows a high standard of professionalism. For example when working In a childcare setting it is important that you try to have a positive outlook and have strong motivation as it is known that children will pick up on others behaviour, so if you’re having a bad day and you’re are moody and not very motivated then the children and even the adults may pick up on that and feel that if the teachers feeling like that maybe I should be to. It is important that as a practitioner that you fully understand and are aware of children’s development. This is mandatory because if you weren’t aware of a child’s development you may set them activities that aren’t age and stage appropriate, as a result of this children may become frustrated and annoyed that they either cant complete it or that the set activity is to easy and therefore they aren’t being stimulated cognitively which can lead to a lack of progress in…

I include activities and books about different cultures and different home environments. I provide activities that they are capable of completing and materials that are age appropriate, I encourage children to share stories about their family. I ask them about their family, culture, and gender, I respect and recognize their emotional and physical needs. I help them with activities if my help is needed. I show empathy toward their feelings. I encourage them to talk about their feelings, and how they are different, and give them appropriate ways to express them. Whether they are sad, mad, or stressed. I comfort them. I respect if children have different religions and find ways to get them to participate in activities.
