Work and Travel
Scrolling down the Newsfeed of Facebook, seeing those pictures of my friends having fun while studying and travelling abroad, the feeling of envy overwhelmed me. I always wanted to have a taste of living in a new environment at another corner of world. However, the fees and expenses to study and travel abroad are just way too high and unaffordable. Thus, I always kept this little dream within myself until the moment I found out about the USA Work and Travel Program from the Speedwing advertisement in my university. The fee to take part of this program is affordable and the participants could even earn travelling expenses by working for three months in the foreign land. Thus, I decided to persuade my family to sponsor me so that I could achieve this little dream of mine. I believed this was the golden chance for me to jump at the chance to be more than a tourist but to immerse myself in a new culture and have an extraordinary lifetime experience.
I was fortunate to have eight friends to join the W&T program along with me.
All of us were employed by Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, California and worked as ride operators and game operators. As an engineering student, it was fascinating to be able to see how those rides worked and the mechanisms to operate the rides.
This was somehow related to what I have learnt in the university. I would never find any meaning of those mechanisms by just reading through all the textbooks until I saw it with my own eyes. At the same time, I learnt about the management system of such a huge theme park company and gained knowledge about the safety and human resources arrangement. As a ride operator, we are the rules enhancer in order to ensure no accidents or injury happens while the customers having fun on the rides. At first, I was worried that it would be tough for me to operate such a huge machine / ride such as Cliff Hangers and Cyclone and handle the customers all by myself. However, most of the customers and supervisors are caring

    • Teenagers/Young Adults: Older audiences would be expecting exciting forms of entertainment, which would more than likely come into the form of the rides that they expect to go on. In this case, they would probably want to have accessible rides with organised queues (so that it does not take a large amount of time to actually get to the ride), information regarding how stacked the lines are so that the teenagers are also to plan ahead if they would want to wait for a long time for a specific…

Screams pierced through the salty, humid, California air. Intimidating rides towered above me, even the thought of riding them terrifying me. Thundering waves crashed as a backdrop for the “Belmont Park” sign that about touched the clouds. Excitement and anticipation coursed through my veins. My palms turned clammy and we made our way through the never ending line to get our tickets. Wafting through the light breeze was the sweet aroma of funnel cakes, cotton candy, and hotdogs. Looking around me I knew one thing, I was determined to go on the three most daunting rides, the Giant Dipper, a hair-raising roller coaster, the Beach Blaster, sickening my stomach at the thought of it and lastly the dark looming room of extreme laser tag.…

How I feel about the process is that it was very long, there were a lot of requirements in order to be a part of it and to get it, and also you had to do a lot so you can keep it. I didn’t see my family for awhile because I was not able to leave and I did not want to risk it even if I went for a weekend.…

The Roller Coaster has a long varied history. It has origins in large ice slides found mostly in Russia around the 16th and 17th century. In the 1800s many appeared, primarily in America. The industry continued into the 1920s, which are known as the “golden age” for roller coasters. Production for roller coasters slowed down during the Great Depression, and by WW2 very few were being produced.…

When my mom mentioned going to King’s Island earlier in the year, I was a bit nervous. I didn’t have the best experience with rollercoasters in the past, and didn’t know if I even liked them after going to Holiday World and being forced to ride most of them. But I didn’t know what I was in for in May when I got to go to King’s Island (for school) for the first time. I would’ve been fine not riding a coaster all day, but my group just kept nagging me! What do you, it turned out I loved roller coasters. After that trip I knew my family and…

At thirteen years old, I was the kid that no one wanted to drag to an amusement park with because I strictly stuck to the merry go round and swings. My parents were always eagerly trying to persuade me to at least try a roller coaster but I refused. Deep inside I wanted to be fearless and be able to jump on the attraction like there was no problem, but I was too nervous. All of my friends, including my family were adrenaline junkies, always wanting to get on the roughest and worst rides of them all. This naturally caused me to become even more frustrated when attending Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri, which was very often. It wasn’t till one day when visiting the park that I decided I was not just going to take a risk, but I was determined to overcome my first roller coaster.…
