Aristotle proposes the four element theory: earth, air, fire & water Plato coins term ‘elements’ (stoicheia) Sir Francis Bacon published "The Proficience and Advancement of Learning" which contained a description of what would later be known as the scientific method. Robert Boyle published "The Sceptical Chymist" which was a treatise on the distinction between chemistry and alchemy. It also contained some of the earliest ideas of atoms, molecules, and chemical reaction marking the beginning of the history of modern chemistry Joseph Black isolated carbon dioxide, which he called "fixed air". Antoine Lavoisier wrote the first extensive list of elements containing 33 elements & distinguished between metals and non-metals

At this time a group of philosophers known as the monists were heatedely debating which element was the first element, the one which all others emerged. Empedocles believed that there wasn't a first element, because the universe was composed of all four elements, that matter existed because the four elements combined. For example, Empedocles believed that the sea was mostly composed of Water, but Air, Fire, and Earth were also within it, or it couldn't exist. Empedocles's idea of a combined Universe of Four Elements became the dominate philosophy, and other philosophers such as Plato, Hippocrates, Galen, and others expanded upon…

Throughout history, scientists and alchemists have considered different theories about the elements that make up the universe. One of the first theories surrounding the elements was Empedocles’s theory, which stated that there were four basic elements that made up the world around us. These elements included fire, water, earth and air. Since then, we have found that the four ‘elements’ the Empedocles’s theory consisted of, aren’t actually elements at all. Water, for example, is a compound which consists of two elements: hydrogen and oxygen.…

The first part was that elements are composed of indivisible particles, called atoms. Next was, all atoms of a given element have the same mass, and the mass of an atom of a given element is different from the mass of an atom of any other element. After that was, when elements combine to form compounds, the atoms of one element combine with those of the other element(s) to form molecules. Then was, atoms of two or more elements may combine in different ratios to form different compounds. Finally was his last theory of the atomic theory. The most common ratio of atoms is 1:1, and were more than one compound of two or more elements exists, the most stable is the one with 1:1 ratio of atoms. His fifth theory was proven to be wrong almost immediately after he had shared it in one of his books. The first three theories were slightly modified to become true. The fourth theory has been unable to be proven wrong even with today’s technology. These four atomic theories have been the basic understanding for mass relationship in chemical compounds and chemical…

The age of enlightenment was a big adventure for the science world. Hennig Brand was the first person recorded to have discovered a new element. He was a German merchant who went bankrupt, while trying to discover the Philosopher’s Stone. The Philosopher’s stone was a mythical object that was supposed to turn inexpensive base metals into gold. He experimented with distilling human urine until he finally obtained a white substance which he named phosphorous in 1649. Brand did not go to the public with his discovery until another scientist named Robert Boyle rediscovered it and took it to the public. In 1661, Boyle defined an element has a substance that cannot be broken down by chemical means. Antoine Lavoisier developed the first chemistry textbook. This included the elements oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, phosphorous, mercury, zinc, and sulfur. Lavoisier's descriptions of the elements only classified elements as metals or non-metals. Johann Döbereiner began to classify…

    Dmitri Mendeleev

Mendeleev is known for revolutionizing our understanding of the properties of atoms and creating a table that probably embellishes every chemistry classroom in the world. His greatest accomplishment was the stating of the Periodic Law and the development of the Periodic Table. From early in his career, he felt that there was some type of order to the elements, so he spent more than thirteen years of his life collecting data and assembling the concept. His first Periodic Table was compiled on the basis of arranging the elements in ascending order of atomic weight and grouping them by similarity of properties. He predicted the existence and properties of new elements and pointed out accepted atomic weights that were in error. By arranging all of the 63 elements then known by their atomic weights, he managed to organize them into groups possessing similar properties. He constructed the tables by listing the elements in rows or columns in order of atomic weight and starting a new row or column when the characteristics of the elements began to repeat. Where a gap existed in the table, he predicted a new element would one day be found and deduce its properties.…
