Word Detectives Argumentative Analysis
Word Detectives is a peer reviewed article found using EBSCOHost. It is directed at teachers of reading from kindergarten to eighth grade and provides them with direct examples of what morphological instruction should look like. The article shares the value of teaching students how to use morphological knowledge to increases students’ morphological awareness, phonological awareness, and vocabulary and spelling accuracy. There are inconsistent results when it comes to reading comprehension increasing from morpheme instruction. To specifically increase students’ reading comprehension using morphological instruction, it must be repeated, explicit small group instruction; moreover, these small groups have a positive impact on students with reading disabilities and English language learners. As students grade levels increase, the number of morphemes they encounter in their texts increase; therefore, morpheme instruction is vital for student growth. Teaching students the meaning of these morphemes increases their chances of figuring out the meaning of unfamiliar words. …show more content…
It contributes to their phonological awareness, vocabulary, spelling, and decoding. A negative would be the discrepancy of its ability to increase students’ reading comprehension. Surprisingly, it did not create a dramatic increase in reading comprehension—the very nature of a morpheme knowledge assistances in finding the words meaning. New to my idea bank is how older students have more demand on their morpheme knowledge and require more knowledge to comprehend a text. This article supports my understanding of daily Word Study instruction through small group, explicit teaching of word patterns and their meanings.
