FACTS: Leon Wood was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA annual college draft on 1984 NBA draft. After being unsuccessful during contract negotiations, Wood was offered a one year contract at $75,000. Patrick Williams, Vice President and General Manager of Philadelphia the contract was offered to Wood not because of the limitations of the 1983 memorandum agreement, but to preserve Philadelphia's exclusive right to negotiate with Wood following the regulations set forth by the NBA. Even though There are “disaster stories of players entering the N.B.A. draft from high school and failing spectacularly. But as tragic as these stories are, they are the exception.A study by Michael McCann, a professor at Vermont Law School who is an expert on sports and legal issues, found that of the 21 high school players who declared for the draft from 1975 to 2001, four became superstars—Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Jermaine O'Neal, and Tracy McGrady—and only four never made it to the N.B.A. The results were similar with those drafted from the classes of 2002 through 2005, when the ban was put in place: Of the 26 players drafted, 20 were still playing through last season and…

Game Day had arrived for the two rival basketball teams; the Eagles and the Tigers. The loud and passionate fans had been waiting in line for hours out in the freezing cold weather. As the warm ups started the players were getting nervous. Both teams wanted the state championship very bad and they were just hours away from winning it. Months and months of strenuous conditioning and closely won ball games had all come down to this one game. The referee threw the perfectly round orange rubber ball in the air for the tip off and the game began. Both teams came out very aggressively. The encouraging cheers from the pumped up fans were really driving both teams to give it their all. The entertaining game was neck and neck the entire way through. Nobody could tell which team had the edge. It all came down to the final seconds of the game. The scoreboard showed that the Eagles were down 73 to 74. The star player took the ball inside against the biggest player on the Tigers. He was fouled hard and fell down onto the hardwood floor. The coaches and fans were infuriated that it was not called a technical foul. The star player was at the black painted free throw line with the potential to win the game. He shot the ball and made the first free throw just like he had done many times before. The time came for the second free throw and there was a huge silence in the nervous crowd. He shot the ball and it was in the air for what seemed like a lifetime. It rattled around the orange rim and then went through the white roped net. The Eagles had won the state…

A basketball is an air filled sphere with a leather skin. There are different companies that make basketballs like Russel & Baden. The different types of shapes affect the aerodynamics of a basketball. Although at first it may sound strange, the motion of a basketball when it leaves the hands of a player is governed by the same physical laws of an airplane. There are multiple ways to affect the aerodynamics of the ball like the flick of the wrist, force and the quickness of the release when you shoot. The texture of a basketball as well as the weight can play on the aerodynamics of the basketball and can affect the rotation speed.…

This policy was effective for the 2005-2006 season of the NBA, and from the onset of the creation of this policy between the NBA and players union, there was immediate backlash from many players who felt the policy was unreasonable. In the third annual High School Hoops magazine, many players began to weigh in on the subject of the new rules regarding draft eligibility. Kansas State freshman Bill Walker said, "I’m against it. I don’t see why you have to be 19 to play a game of basketball when you can be 18 and go to war for our country and die. It’s ridiculous." Jerryd Bayless said "It’s not fair at all. If a tennis player can go pro at 13, I don’t understand why a basketball player can’t go pro at 18 (Bodenburg, Canner-O'mealy, Mahoney, and Sylvan, 2005).…

In 1977–78, the Celtics owned two of the top eight picks in the 1978 NBA Draft.[26] Since the Celtics had two draft choices, Auerbach took a risk and selected junior Larry Bird of Indiana State with the 6th pick, knowing that Bird would elect to remain in college for his senior year. The Celtics would retain his rights for one year, a rule that was later changed, and Auerbach believed that Bird's potential would make him worth the wait. Auerbach also felt that when the college season ended the Celtics would have a great chance to sign Bird. Auerbach was right and Bird signed soon after leading Indiana State to the NCAA Championship game, where they fell to a Michigan State University team that was led by Magic Johnson.[27]…

Last year, the Portland Trail Blazers were the surprise and feel good story of the NBA. Losing a star in Lamarcus Aldridge in free agency, along with Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum spelled doom for Trail Blazers. Many in the media and across the league picked Portland to finish near the bottom of the west and destined for a lottery finish. Instead, the squad finished with 44 wins and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. The Blazers front office responded by retaining their talent and acquiring pieces through free agency. This included 100 million over 4 years for CJ McCollum, 40 million over 4 years for Moe Harkless, 75 million over 4 years for Allen Crabbe, and 70 million over 4 years for Evan Turner. This year, things have gone…

The ethical issues and tactics that I can think back on is when we had a basketball game and I did not realize it at the time but one of my players was fouled and as I was talking to one of the coaches another player was called to the foul line to shoot free throws and as I turn back around to see the player that was fouled standing at half court, and as I looked at him with a dumb look he shrugged his shoulders to say as if he don’t know. After a couple of times down the floor their was a timeout called and I had to ask the question why were you not shooting the free throws and his response was he walked to the line and they said it was not you who was fouled,…

Brent Mayne was a Major League player whom was paid $2.5 million over the course of a year, yet his batting average was well below the expected standard at only a .238 (Bradbury 75). Many other players who have higher capabilities than Mayne are paid less, the only difference being the name on their uniforms. The Houston Rockets signed a rookie for $6.2 million , while Charles Barkley, with years of experience, signed for a mere $75,000 a year with the Philadelphia 76ers (DiLasco). This is where collective bargaining plays an important role. Collective bargaining is trying…

In the National Basketball Association (NBA), it is very common to see a professional in the game of basketball to constantly make mistakes and break the rules of the game they not only love but get paid millions to play. There are fights, obscene gestures towards referees, and even instances where some of the most basic fundamentals of the game of basketball are forgotten. When it comes to basketball most people can tell you the following: you have to dribble the ball to advance it legally up the court and you shoot the ball into the hoop in order to score points. If an average Joe off the street such as myself can explain those two basic rules of basketball, why is it professionals who have been playing most of their lives fail to follow these rules from time to time? Ask the person next to you and they would almost certainly equate it human…

This negotiation analyses describes the negotiation that took place during the movie “Draft Day.” Draft day is one of the most important days in the National Football League and occurs once per year(). It allows general managers to develop and improve their roster of players in hopes of bettering their team. Due to the multiparty negotiations that included but are not limited to the general managers of the NFL teams, the various coaches of the teams, the prospective players, one current player of the Browns, the war room staff, and the Browns franchise owner, the negotiations were quite complex. All of the above parties played an integral role in the draft in which the objective was to choose players who would benefit a particular…
