Bullying
Bullying. We all know what it is, what it does to people... It scars people, for life. R.J Palacio's book Wonder really gives you an insight on how bullying doesn't only affect the victim, but their family and everyone around them too. Did you know that around 160 000 students stay home on any given day because they are fearing what they might have to face at school? I doubt that you did. This is a sad and confronting subject that we all need to know about. Wonder portrays a young boys point of view on being bullied because of his face deformity, that, my friends, doesn't seem fair at all.

What is family?
Is it the people that you love, or something you are born into?
In my opinion it who you love, and it doesn't just have to be relatives, it can be friends as well.
In Wonder, the importance of family is clearly shown by Augusts parents and sister, as well as his friends.
Although August is different, his family still love him and want to protect him. In the story you can clearly see how much his family love him by the way they worry about him, going to school, going on camp and most of the things he does throughout the story.
Family is clearly a very important theme throughout R.J Palcios, Wonder.

Acceptance

Trying to be accepted can be pretty scary. You are constantly checking that you look ok, that your clothes aren't ugly, that you are actually being accepted, but for Auggie, it's a lot different. He knows that he is different, and he doesn't try to change it. He thinks that he is going to be a loner, a social reject, but when two kids become his friends and look past his face deformity, he realises that anyone can be accepted and that it's not all about being in the more popular group, just being in the one that cares.

Conclusion-
Family, acceptance, and bullying are all key issues discussed in this novel and issues which are very relevant today. As a group we have enjoyed reading the novel Wonder as it opened our eyes

Browns December precept which read, “ Fortune favors the bold” Most definitely favors auggie. One of the ways it favors auggie was when he lost his lobot hearing aid from sticking up to the kids he felt very bold and then later on the hearing aids were to be paid for. This shows that because of him sticking up to the bullies and being bold he was able to not have much damage done to himself. Another example is when auggie first came to breacher prep he was made fun of and ignored but throughout the year people started to notice that he is a great guy and just like them and at the very end of the year at the award ceremony, he won the best reward of them all, the Henry Ward Beecher medal.…

During this week of reading Wonder By Palacio a quote that popped up to me was “Does August see how other people see him, or has he gotten so good at pretending not to see that it doesn’t bother him? Or does it bother him? When he looks in the mirror, does he see the Auggie Mom and Dad sees or does he see the Auggie everyone else see? Or is there another August he sees, someone in his dreams behind the misshapen head and face?” because It made me think about how August feels about how other people look at him and how his parents look at him. Also it made me wonder how Mom and Dad look at August is different by the way other people look at him and how he looks at himself. This made me feel bad for August having to deal with what other people…

When a bunch of kids bullied him his real friends helped him and stood up for him. He showed courage by staying at school even after he got bullied at the drive in movie. He pushed through his hard times even though he was so upset. Auggie’s parents and Via helped him get through his hard times and encourage him to go to school in the first place. Even though he did not enjoy school at first he ended up loving school and made lots of friends. He was so scared about going to school but he ended up doing it finding out who his real friends are. When he started out at school he had friends that were mean to him and were fake friends, so throughout the year he found out who were his real friends and who he could really trust. Another time when Auggie showed courage was when it was Halloween costume day, and he dressed up as the bleeding scream instead of a star wars character so Julian and Jack didn’t see him come in the room because they expected the star wars character. They were talking about how ugly his face is and they were talking bad about Auggie. In the bleeding scream costume when he came in they didn’t know it was him and so he heard their whole conversation they were saying about him. His feelings were so hurt and he was crying. Those were his “friends” that were saying those mean things about him. He didn’t know what to think. It made him realize all this time they were just friends…

Bullying has become a high profile issue faced by many people, on a day to day basis. Most Americans believe that, a little teasing and bullying at school is just a childhood rite of passage. What they don’t know is that, there are long lasting, ramifications for victims, as well as for bullies; according to the 2009 issue of the Harvard Mental Health Center (Harvard University, 2009). Bullied children may acquire debilitating mental illnesses such as, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, and in more serious cases suicidal tendencies. Chronic childhood bullying victims are at higher risks of suicide. “Bullying magnifies these genetic and environmental predisposing risk factors” (Veskler, 2011). A new wave of research shows that in fact, bullying can leave a negative, permanent imprint on a child’s brain, while still in its formative years. These neurological scars of a bullied victim closely resemble those of a physically or sexually abused child. Revealing these psychological long-term effects, has given the ability to precast bullying not just as a “rite of passage, but a serious form of childhood trauma” (Anthes, 2010).…
