Wonder By R J Palocia Character Analysis
Wonder, written by R.J. Palacia, is about a 10 year old boy named August “Auggie” Pullman. Auggie was born with severe facial deformities. They were so bad that the doctor that delivered Auggie fainted when Auggie was born. Auggie was homeschooled by his mom, but when he turned 10 and was about to go into 5th grade, his parents decided that he should go to regular school. He embarked on an adventure in middle school at Beecher Prep. I think this was the best thing that could have happened to Auggie and it had a positive impact on him.

Before Auggie went to Beecher Prep he only had one good friend, Christopher. He made two really good friends at Beecher Prep, Jack Will and Summer. Christopher and Auggie had a lot of the same likes, Star Wars for one. If he hadn’t gone to school, it would have been fine to have one friend. I believe that the more friends you have, the more you will be exposed to. Different people in your life bring different experiences.

Auggie’s parents babied him and going to school made him grow up some. I understand why his parents babied him. They wanted to protect him. Because of all of his health problems they felt like they needed to protect him. Protect him from people’s stares, mean comments and from any physical injury. Of course, you can’t grow up, learn to be independent and gain confidence with your parents hovering over

“So will August Pullman please come up here to receive this award?” This quote shows that Auggie going to school helped him because he not only helps himself but the people around him. Browns December precept which read, “ Fortune favors the bold” Most definitely favors auggie. One of the ways it favors auggie was when he lost his lobot hearing aid from sticking up to the kids he felt very bold and then later on the hearing aids were to be paid for. This shows that because of him sticking up to the bullies and being bold he was able to not have much damage done to himself. Another example is when auggie first came to breacher prep he was made fun of and ignored but throughout the year people started to notice that he is a great guy and just like them and at the very end of the year at the award ceremony, he won the best reward of them all, the Henry Ward Beecher medal.…

During this week of reading Wonder By Palacio a quote that popped up to me was “Does August see how other people see him, or has he gotten so good at pretending not to see that it doesn’t bother him? Or does it bother him? When he looks in the mirror, does he see the Auggie Mom and Dad sees or does he see the Auggie everyone else see? Or is there another August he sees, someone in his dreams behind the misshapen head and face?” because It made me think about how August feels about how other people look at him and how his parents look at him. Also it made me wonder how Mom and Dad look at August is different by the way other people look at him and how he looks at himself. This made me feel bad for August having to deal with what other people…

In Wonder, Auggie Pullman, who lives in New York City, has a facial difference. His left clef plate is missing, his eyes are too low on his head, the corners of his smile go sideways instead of up, and his ears look like they have been punched way too many times. Because of this, Auggie is socially challenged. He hasn’t ever been to a real school because of all his surgeries. Now, he is entering the fifth grade at Beecher Prep since he hasn’t had a surgery in a while. His mother takes him to Beecher Prep for a tour. He meets three other fifth graders, Julian, Charlotte, and Jack Will. Julian is very mean and obnoxious, and doesn’t know when to stop. He even asks Auggie what the deal was with his face.…

Children in August’s grade treated him as an outsider at the beginning of “Wonder”. Many claimed he had the “plague” and wouldn’t dare to make any physical contact with August, as shown on page 120; “Anyone who accidentally touches August has only thirty seconds to wash their hands or find hand sanitizer before they catch the Plague.” However, this does not consider that the attitudes towards Auggie reversed by the end of “Wonder”. To prove this, evidence is given on page 308; “In fact, and I don’t mean to brag here, but it kind of felt like everyone wanted to get close to me.” Despite people being fearful of even touching Auggie at the beginning of the year, people became more comfortable with him and even chose to come and get close to him for the group picture.…

The disease is called Mandibulofacialdiysastosis, which causes a major facial deformity. The story is about accepting people’s differences. This novel is written in a multiple first person view, which means that it’s written from a lot of different perspectives. He was brave enough to transition from homeschool to public school because of how his face has to affect everything else he does. An illustration of this is shown on page 369 when Palacio states “Luckily, a few days later, we did find out that I’d gotten into my first-choice private school, not far from where I lived. I’d have to wear a uniform, but that was okay.” From this we can indicate that Auggie is very versatile to where he goes to school and all the things that shift for him. Appreciating that there will inevitably be new procedures that everyone needs to absorb takes time to forge positive procedures with new colleagues is something Auggie distinctly takes conduct of. Thinking of Auggie and the hardships he experiences daily, that most people never think of is what I truly see how Auggie is determined to always adapt to a new environment. We hear a lot in our lives about the importance of being flexible and versatile. Whether it’s being flexible in working hours, attitudes with your colleagues, or even changing to a new environment persistently. Although, most think their life seems difficult because of having to move to a new environment or something they are new to; Auggie takes this to the next level where people stare at him to every step he takes and wherever he goes. Nevertheless, he does handle this very well at his age, where…
