Women in Korean Society: A Past and Present Perspective
Soobeen Hyun G9B
“The Music from Gwangsang Mountian where I played in my dream” is one of the most famous poems, which was written by a woman who lived in 1500s. The poem basically means that the writer of this poem eager to escape from the patriarchal society. The poem was written by a Korean women poet “Heo Hanselheon” who lived in 1500s wrote this poem before she died. This poem is describing when she had a dream that she was in the place called “Gwangsang Mountain”. Gwangsang Mountain is actually represents the paradise that she always dreamed of which is being free from the paternalism.
In the poem, the first line, “Blue sea- water permeate into beaded sea,” show the paradise she had been dreaming, also means the scene that she saw in her dream. The second line, “Blue bird line on colored bird,” means that she is tired of all her life and she need some “rest”. The third line, “Twenty- seven lotus flower fall in red” tell us that the “rest” is death when she become a twenty-seven years old, which is predicting her death. Of coarse, red would be color of blood, which also represents her death. The last line, “It is cold on the moon light frost”, is telling that the moon light frost which represents the cruel society towards her is leading her to death or doesn’t feel any guilty and sympathy to her.
In the poem, most of words are represent death of her and the dream that she had. The reason why this is important because we understand and assume how harsh her life was how much she wanted leave this horrible place. Since her poem tells us that she wants to escape from patriarchal society, so which relates to our unit 2, Hidden Voice, that there were many Korean women who had same wish like writer of this poem.
On the other side, the K-pop music has totally different meanings and story than the old Korean poem. The music “I Will Show You” by Ailee is one of the music that women power gets stronger and

The poem discusses the funeral of a woman and how she is presented in her funeral as someone people would be more likely to romanticize than what she actually was, perhaps out of a misguided sign of respect. The other more hidden meaning behind the poem is the author's reaction to the women herself and how she is portrayed in almost a spiteful, angry way because of his anger over her wasting her life in gray dullness.…

Upon reading the poem, imagery can be found throughout the entire poem. For example, in the first two lines you can imagine a doll being put away like a dead child in a chest, you cannot bring a dead child back to life. This is the burial of her childhood only to keep her memories and carry them with her for the rest of her life. Also, the second to last line where she is “wound,” twisted, “like the guts of a clock,” referring to her stomach. She feels a sense of anxiety here. This is her final emotion to conclude the poem. She fears growing up because of the responsibilities she will have to take on, the shame she felt when her period started, will…

“How she longed for winter then! Scrupulously austere in its order of white and black”, this line symbolizes the lady’s desire to make things within her reach because as we’ve all know in a typical winter ambience things are very definite with only two dimension: black and white, uniformity/order is present in contrast with spring. And so with her sentiments, she wanted to attain a life free from many irregularities like what she had experienced from this little and sometimes unstable thing called love. “Ice and rock; each sentiment within border, and heart’s frosty discipline exact as snowflake”, here using elements of winter, entails the lady’s pronouncement to make her emotions wrapped and her heart frozen just to avoid anymore distractions and…

"A Beautiful Girl Combs Her Hair" certainly is filled with beautiful imagery. I could very easily picture the girl "standing on the ivory bed, loosening her hair, watching the mirror..." The poem also contains metaphors. The speaker refers to the girl as a "lotus blossum" and "a wild goose on the sand." I especially liked line 17, "drop the jade comb-no sound." Maybe this is where the translation differs, because it doesn't read "she dropped the jade comb" or even "drops the jade comb" with the subject understood. The image that I see, however, is a beautiful, heavy jade comb falling on a bed so fluffy, pillowy, and soft that the comb doesn't make a sound. The luxurious bed, the silk curtains, the cherry blossoms just down the steps, and the girl's long, thick, perfumed hair make me visualize a paradise as rich as the imagery itself. It seems the speaker is the one who is "Awake at dawn" as the first line says. "The lotus blossom wakes" in line 8. Perhaps he woke early to go watch this girl whom he admires wake up. Or maybe he is so in love with her that he could not sleep for thinking of her. He was already "Awake at dawn" and couldn't stand being without her any longer so he had to go see…

The 1970s period could be regarded as a really important dividing line for Korean cinema. Changing from the Golden Age of the Korean film industry to the well-known low quality period, the films before and after 1970s have many differencies that are worthy to pay attention to. Not only for the film industry, the 1970s period is also a core transitional period in Korean society, a transition from the traditional Confucian society to the modern society. With the changes of political views and economic circumstances, South Koreans thoughts towards the society changes too. Because of the great amount of ideological changes among South Koreans, male’s dominant position starts to slightly move to another way. In the traditional Confucian society of South Korea, a man in a dominant position controls everything, integrity, honesty and more qualities is his criteria. At the same time, with the inviolability of the patriarchal, women stands in a subordinate position. In the process of the transformation towards the modern society, the status of women is gradually increasing, and for a short period of time men began to fall into the lost and confusion for the superficial phenomenon that males are losing their status, so they have difficulties in finding their directions. However, when the transformation was completed, men figure out that they are still in the dominant position, given more respect, freedom and rights to the women, men are still controllers in the real sense. All of these sociopolitical developments affecting the gender relationships among South Koreans are reflected by the movies. So in this article, I will use The Housemaid (Korean:하녀;translit:Hanyeo, directed by Kim Ki-young) and Poetry (Korean:시;translit:Shi, directed by…

The title itself says a lot about the poem, although its meaning is made clear later. In the fifth line Lee states how he does not know what his home country is like, he has “Never been in Peking, or the summer palace”. Lee is asking his mother to sing so that he can learn about the places he has never been too but is nonetheless attached to. The poem as a whole reads much like a song, rhythmic and enchanting.…

As I read the poem entitled “On Hearing Her Play the Harp” for the first time, I got surprised of the fact that the poem has only four lines and that the words were pretty simple and easy to understand for first time readers but in fact the poem had a deeper and a more interesting meaning behind it. At my initial reading with no little or no research at all, I visualized everything as a white young pretty woman who comes from a rich and powerful family because of the fact that she is playing a “golden –fretted harp and as she plays through the frets of the notes, I imagined Chou You a young and a handsome rich lad which she likes, enters the room she is in, and to be noticed by this young man she decides to think of a way to attract the eyes of the young Chou Yu, so she decides to use the obvious, which is to attract him by playing wrong notes now and then, and by doing I visualize Chou Yu falling in love in with the beautiful white harp player. Being ignorant or knowledgeable about certain things can really change your perspective about your environment and a lot more like in this poem, as I read the poem a second time with the information I had gathered with my research in Chinese History. My studying about Chinese History changed how I interpreted the poem. Changes like how I must stress on details in order for my readers to understand the setting Chou Yu and the beautiful musician are in. For example I did not describe the setting at all in which the girl was in and how she played the harp and what kind of harp was it and how she attracted in full detail Chou Yu. After giving a little minor tweaks to my interpretation this is it how it starts. A big yet simple wooden house, overlooking the vast farmlands of China with doors similar to that of the Japanese and beautiful wide windows which gives the house the bright and fresh feeling. And in this house’ function room you may find a young woman with skin like white…
