I disagree with the statement “There is no longer evidence that discrimination is widely practiced in the United States,” especially with regards to women and wage discrimination. The practice of paying men more than women for the same job, because men had to provide for their families, was once accepted in the world of business, but is now illegal due to the Equal Pay Act of 1963. However, even today women continue to earn substantially less money than men in comparable positions. The statistics suggest that women have made progress in closing the wage gap as of late, but those numbers can be somewhat misleading.     Today, women have just as many rights as anyone else does and hold prominent positions in companies, whereas this would be unheard of in the Progressive Era. Women enjoy the simple freedoms of being allowed to strive for any job of their choosing, have free speech, and do not have to rely on a man to support them. While women do have rights that equal men, there is still a blaring issue in today’s times: the wage gap. According to an article published in The Wall Street Journal that conducted a poll discussing gender in workplace bias, “84% of women say men are paid more for similar work, a view borne out by government data but which draws agreement from only two-thirds of men. More than four in 10 women say they have faced gender discrimination personally, most often in the workplace” (Nelson). The article further expounds to address very specific data. Some of that data was collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “The Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that women who work full-time earn 79% of the weekly pay that men bring home. The Institute for Women's Policy Research, which tracks the gender wage gap, finds that women's median earnings lag men's in almost every occupation.
