In the story “Leopard” by Wells Tower the narrator is an 11 year old boy who has troubles dealing with his stepfather, he wants to stay home from school because of a fungus on his lip which the kids would bully him for. When he makes the decision of staying home from school, he goes through many hurdles coping with his stepfather which shows us the protagonist is self-conscious and a deceiver. Percy Julian’s story is one of many stories that depicted the struggle that blacks had to go through in his time to truly succeed in a world that viewed him as inferior. Before viewing the documentary, Forgotten Genius, I had never heard of Percy Lavon Julian. However, I feel grateful to have witnessed his inspiring story. Chapter one starts off with introducing two men, George Milton and Lennie Small. George Milton is usually the one to look out for Lennie because Lennie is know as “retarded”.Lennie Small is a huge man with resembling a bear by the way he walks and acts. Both George and Lennie are walking along a path near a pool of water towards a ranch where they can both find temporary work for the both of them. Lennie, without thinking, decides to drop the the floor near the water and start drinking. George then tries to warn Lennie that the water is probably not clean and unsanitary to be drinking. The connection between humans and animals is truly a special one as demonstrated in Tim Bowling's "Snowy Owl After Midnight." The speaker in the short story feels closely connected to the owl as he walks in the forest at night. The speaker believes that the owl "waits for [him]" and that the owl's "blood stirs/ at [his] presence." Also, the owl seems to understand the "heightened smell of joy and fear/ [the speaker's] bones give off. Since the night is "so quiet," the speaker feels that he and the owl are the only two "awake," Strengthening their bond even more. Both the owl and the hunter are on a search for food hence they feel a sense of connection with each other during the long dark night. As they travel together, the speaker remembers the "months" they've spent circling in "each other's silence." The speaker has a sudden urge to break the silence and talk to the owl as a friend. He longs to express to the beautiful winged creature about his "boyish dream" that consisted of the "beating heart of a snowman." Furthermore, the speaker wishes to hear the thoughts of the owl about the "blood" that is on the earth and what the owl would think if he knew the deaths that could be caused by the "clipped, pale hands" of the hunter. In the short story "Flight" by Alice Lessing, it's the story of an old man who raises homing pigeons for a hobby and who constantly worries about his last granddaughter, Alice, leaving and getting married tothe postmaster's son, Steven. The old man is very overprotective and also possessive of his daughter.In a way, the grandfather is also jealous of Alice's fiancé, Steven.
