Winters Bone
September 14, 2012
Winter’s Bone questions 1. In October sky, there was always a sense of hope that Homer was going to overcome any obstacle in his way (which he did), and achieve his goal. Winter’s Bone, however, there was always this feeling of dread, like the worst has yet to come. It was a much darker movie than October sky also. The lighting in the film was always eerie and dull. There were bright moments in October sky though. Both films ended on a good note although Homer’s going to be following his dreams and all Ree got was some money but then again, that’s all she really needed. 2. The cold, dull forest, the old beat down cabins and the junky cars and trucks all make me feel like Arkansas is one of the worst places to live in. These really help to set the tone for this film, because it really seems like most of the people there are poor not living great. 3. Yes Ree is a hero in my eyes because she’s courageous, selfless, trustworthy, and persistent in trying to find her dad. She doesn’t care what happens to her she just wants her siblings and mother to not have to live an even more dreadful life. For example, she only tried to join the army to get the money that came with giving service but when she found out she couldn’t care for her siblings if she left, she decided it wasn’t a good idea. Teardrop has a change of heart throughout the film, he starts helping Ree when he decides he wants revenge for his brother’s death. At first he didn’t want anything to do with it but later he saves her from the people that beat her up. It really shocked me when he started helping her because he just seemed so mean and aggressive at first. I thought he was going to find the killer and kill him. 4. I think they knew what happened to Jessup and knew that it was best not to help or talk about it with Ree. Teardrop helps her by rescuing her from the Milton’s. 5. It made feel grateful for what I have and the way I’m living because I would never want to

“The town itself is dreary; not much is there except the cotton mill”. This description reminded me of the time I used to live in Hanford, CA, which is located in the south central San Joaquin Valley. Just like the story, I also founded Hanford to be dreary because there wasn’t much to do, and the only “fun” place in town was the mall, which was spooky at times because my friends and I would be the only ones hanging out there. Although there wasn’t a cotton mill in Hanford, there were sure a lot of dairies so the air smelled like cow waste every single day. The weather also matches the story’s description: “the winters here are short and raw, the summers white with glare and fiery hot”. During summer, temperatures would rise up to 110 degrees,…

Sister Souljah’s style is like no other that I have read, her style is so real and honest. I can quickly understand about the novel (The coldest winter ever) I do not have to think twice about this novel like I do in the other novel that have different language from mine. As I read this book I feel like I am in the Winter’s world. Sister Souljah grew up in the underclass urban areas in New York and knows how Winter feels. I think Winter is actually a part or side of Sister Souljah. She tells the truth and nothing but the truth.…

“You can take a boy out of Kentucky, but you can’t take Kentucky out of a boy,” J.D. Vance writes while quoting Mamaw, his grandmother, and the woman who, in the midst of the adversities of his childhood raised him. With this quote the author explains that the hardship of his upbringing and the cultures of Kentucky, no matter what, will always be part of him. In the book “Hillbilly Elegy,” J.D.Vance, whom is both the author and the main character, narrates about his own experience growing up in the culture crisis of the social, regional, and class decline that affects many white Americans living in the Appalachian Mountains. The elegy of Hillbillies - world used to describe rednecks, the people who inhabit these places- takes place in Middletown Ohio, and Jackson, Kentucky, two cities that according to the author portray the…

I will start with Sam Spade. He is the hero of the story, but I would say he is more of an anti-hero. He plays by his own rules. He is tough and a bit hard-nosed. He doesn't seem to be upset that his partner is dead. I feel that he knew Brigid killed his partner from day one, but for some reason he didn't let on until the end. Knowing this he still put up with her lies and melodrama. He obviously isn't a man of scruples as he was having an affair with his partner's wife. At the end I wonder did he love Brigid as he claims or was he just playing with her? I'm also left wondering was he redeeming his character by turning Brigid over to the police or was he saving his own skin? I like his character but I'm not entirely sure about his motives at all points in the movie. I'm not sure how much I would trust him.…

I think the author decides to separate Connor and Risa from Lev because it creates more tension. You wonder if they will all three meet up again and that helps move the novel forward. Being on his own, I feel Lev grows up a bit and sees Connor and Risa were trying to help him. He becomes a better person and a character you actually grow to like by the end of the novel.…
