Winter Gala Ideas for Teachers
Winter Gala

What is the Winter Gala?
• The Winter Gala is a winter performance in our center that invites current families to attend an event at our center. The children will perform a collection of songs, poems, finger plays, or other material from the curriculum.

What are the Goals and Objectives of this event?
• Historically we see a dip in enrollment in January as a result of families not returning to the center after the winter holiday. The goal of the Winter Gala is to keep families engaged with the center during the winter holidays when vacation and time away from the center can cause families to feel disconnected.

When/ Where will the event be held?
• Performances will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 6 pm. Performances will be held in our lobby on our stage!

Who will be performing?
• The following classrooms will be performing: o Preschool o Pre-Kindergarten o Kindergarten o School-Age

Winter Gala-Performance Activity Suggestions

Performance Suggestions

Classroom Songs:
Consider selecting age-appropriate songs from the Winter Songs & Fingerplays book from the Winter curriculum such as: o Five Little Snowman Fat o If It’s Winter o Mitten Song o Winter Song

For School-Age children consider non-religious holidays: o Frosty the Snowman o Jingle-Bells o Winter Wonderland

Post-Event Activities

We recommend hosting a few activities after the event to encourage families to socialize with staff members and other families. Suggested activities include:

o Family Photo Ops
 Famillies can take photos with their child after the performance.

o Cookie Decorating
 Famillies can decorate cookies together in their respective classrooms after the

One of the ways that I help encourage the parents to get involved with the Center and staff is by sending reminders home about when there will be a parent meeting, open house, or resource fair. These reminders are great for the parents to have so they remember the date and time of the event. By giving the parent the reminder it gives me a chance to also talk to them about what is going to be happening at the event, that way they understand the whole story and I get to keep that communication open between us. Having the parents come in to the events is great, it allows them to see the people that interact with their…

After that came a majority of Middle school/ Elementary. Finally the High schoolers played Nightmare Before Christmas, Believe, Trombone Under the Tree, and lastly Frosty the Snowman. We always make parents welcome to stay and help in any of our sessions. This would give the parents a chance to see their child in a different environment and also to help parents gain the knowledge on how to progress the child in a steady way. It would be good for the child to be able to show their parents around and all the work they do, the child might gain pride in their work. This would also give the parents a chance to ask questions and to join in on a session. You could also get the parents/ carers to bring in baby photos to help with the all about me activity within the sessions, you could also ask parents from a different ethnic background to come and talk to the children about their culture and festivals they may celebrate. This would help the class to understand the different cultures of their friends and why they might do things in a different way to how they would maybe expect. The child would be proud of their parent/carer for talking to the class and would help them to understand that everyone is different and that you might need to help your friend to understand with explaining the different thing in a culture. Parents are also given the opportunity to volunteer to help in all activity but especial the off site ones like the sponsored bike ride we do every year to help raise funds for new equipment within the pre school. This would be good for the children to see their parents / carers supporting them and cheering them on to keep pedalling. Parents / carers are also asked to help with the off site Christmas church session we do singing Christmas carols which the children have learnt within the class. A parent/ carer would find this emotionally pleasing to watch and listen their child whilst joining in with their peers to sing. A child would be happy and might even sing louder so to make sure parents/ carers can hear…
