Wilderness In A Midsummer Night's Dream
In the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a quote said by Bottom states that, “to say the truth, reason and love keep little company together nowadays.” I believe that is is a very important part of the theme of the entire play and can be tied in with the contrast between the Athenian court and the wilderness. The Athenian court in the play is what can be compared to logic and reason. It is to be taken very seriously which is shown in the play in Act 1 when Hermia is given the choices of marrying Demetrius, becoming a nun, or being killed. This can be tied with the quote from Bottom because Hermia does not have any feelings of love towards Demetrius, yet she will still be forced into marrying him because of the law. There are obviously

The wilderness is meant to symbolize emotion, and is meant to be a place in which people can be who they truly are. This is shown by the fact that in the movie of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, whenever the characters are outside of the wilderness, they are all really clean and their clothes are nice and fancy, but when they are in the wilderness they all have dirt covering the faces and their clothes are grimy. The contrast here is that when they are not in the wilderness, the characters are all covered up with fancy dress, and in the wilderness that cleanliness is forgotten. Also, in the wilderness not very many of the fairies are completely dressed. The male fairies do not wear shirts, and the queen, Titania, is barely covered by the “shirt” that she is wearing. This shows that the fairies obviously are not preoccupied with how they look, and have no problem with having their bodies be shown which shows that they must comfortable with who they are. This can translate over to emotions as well. If the fairies are so comfortable in their own skin then they must be comfortable to express how they really feel. This freedom can also be expressed by the human characters who decided that they were going to escape to the wilderness and run away so that they can be with the people that they want to be
