Why I Write
Why I Write
By Joan Didion

Of course I stole the title for this talk, from George Orwell. One reason I stole it was that I like the sound of the words: Why I Write. There you have three short unambiguous words that share a sound, and the sound they share is this: I I I.
In many ways writing is the act of saying I, of imposing oneself upon other people, of saying listen to me, see it my way, change your mind. It‟s an aggressive, even hostile act. You can disguise its aggressiveness all you want with the veils of subordinate clauses and qualifiers and tentative subjunctives, with ellipses and evasions—with the whole manner of intimating rather than claiming, of alluding rather than stating—but there‟s no getting around the fact that setting words on paper is the tactic of a secret bully, an invasion, an imposition of the writer‟s sensibility on the reader‟s most private space.
I stole the title not only because the words sounded right but because they seemed to sum up, in a nononsense way, all I have to tell you. Like many writers I have only this one “subject,” this one “area”: the act of writing. I can bring you no reports from any other front. I may have other interests: I am “interested,” for example, in marine biology, but I don‟t flatter myself that you would come out to hear me talk about it. I am not a scholar. I am not in the least an intellectual, which is not to say that when I hear the word “intellectual” I reach for my gun, but only to say that I do not think in abstracts. During the years when I was an undergraduate at
Berkeley I tried, with a kind of hopeless late-adolescent energy, to buy some temporary visa into the world of ideas, to forge for myself a mind that could deal with the abstract.
In short I tried to think. I failed. My attention veered inexorably back to the specific, to the tangible, to what was

In “Cognition, Convention, and Certainty: What We Need to Know Writing” the author Patricia Bizzell explains what we need to know about writing. Initially, Bizzell states that that there is a “writing problem”. She says that we are just now realizing that it is actually a thinking problem where we used to take student thinking for granted. The author then explains that there are two opposing theoretical camps that see writing differently. The first camp sees writing as inner-directed which focusses on the structure of language-learning and thinking process prior to social influence.…

Sometimes a stern warning is just what you need in order to push you to take a step back and evaluate your next move, especially when it could be a life changing one. In “Alumnus Welcomes New UC Berkeley Students with Stern Warning,” Shouak Bagchi, an alumnus of UC Berkeley, addresses the Berkeley freshmen class of 2017 with appraisal and advice for the future. Bagchi writes to the new students about what attending one of the most prestigious public universities entails. This article is rhetorically persuasive due to the fact that Bagchi is an alumnus of UC Berkeley. He references topics that the students can relate to and he mentions many of the successful alumni of the university.…

There are two schools of thought, when it pertains to the topic of intellectualism. On one end, many individuals believe intellectuals read, write and review great literature and other areas of classical education. On the other end, there are those that believe collective experiences in all phases of life, completely reaches beyond what a person is able to learn alone.…

I would place myself in the category of Advanced Thinker. I say this because I tend to over analyze everything. I think about things way too much sometimes, and I like to think about things from different perspectives. I like to think of myself as the creative type, and in order to be creative I have to think outside of the box. In order to think outside of the box, I have to take everyday situations, and think about them in many different ways. I also have a grandchild, so this has made me become more aware of all of the potential dangers in…

I wasn’t terribly sure what I wanted to do with my life, nor did I have any idea how to get where I thought I wanted to be. My relative lack of passion wasn’t seen as a deterrent in my affluent Texas town, though, as it was a place where nearly all high school students went on to college—it was the only option we really considered or that was presented to us by our families, teachers, and counselors as a post-graduation plan. So I began the requisite search by looking first at nontraditional college environments, for while I had done reasonably well at my large and impersonal public high school, nor had I flourished either. It seemed to me that if I was going to spend the next four years of my life in school, I might as well try a different tactic than the one that had allowed me to coast rather unremarkably through high school.…

Schluter intercepted and confiscated my art. Censorship, I might cry now. Freedom of expression, I would write in editorials to the tribal newspaper. In third grade, though, I stood alone in the corner, faced the wall, and waited for the punishment to end. I’m still waiting” (Alexie 106). I have used this excerpt because to me it encompasses what the whole entire essay is about. You can see Alexie’s Purpose for writing in these few lines. It takes not only a good writer but a great writer to be able to sow his whole entire meaning into every single word he has written. To me he is showing the struggles of a child expressing themselves, bringing back the question of what is good writing. And if teachers are stopping children from expressing themselves Ms. Wager even if it is just in writing, are they even qualified to judge a person’s…
