Why I Teach
Why Teach?
Alisha Anderson

Why teach? I believe that it was meant for me to become a teacher. I have a passion for learning, and I will make my classroom an adventure of learning. A teacher of the year also from Mississippi, Wynona Herchenhahn (2009) indicated that she was a product of good teachers, and I also think that I had many influences coming from great parents and teachers. I love teaching students, they bring out my best values. I like how teachers have the power to change students’ lives to guide them in the right educational path, and that is what I want to do. The person that has inspired me to become a teacher is my mother, Mrs. Jessie Mae Ayers. She has been teaching at the same private school since 1983. She has taught pre-k (3 year olds), 5th -8th graders, and now she has been a librarian since 2004. I would like to be a kindergarten teacher it is the foundation of a student education, and I will like to be the effective teacher that starts that journey. I have worked three years as a kindergarten assistant and five years as a pre-k (four year olds) assistant at a public school. I have a love and respect for students; that I can use to build a solid learning community. Christine Gleason and Cynthia Cole Rigsbee (2009), implies that the greatest award is knowing that they made a difference in their student’s life, and that is what I hope to accomplish.

In my heart I have always wanted to teach. I believe that there are three ingredients to learning. All children can learn, children should be respected as people, and children are children and should be treated that way. I believe that children are able to learn regardless of their race, religion, social status and the environment around them. With a little patience and kindness you can teach a child almost anything. Respect is something that is earned. I believe that if you show children the respect that they deserve they will respect you in return. My goal as an educator is to help children learn in a safe, healthy, nurturing and structured environment. I think that children learn best when there are clear and concise rules and when they are able to participate in their learning. During my teaching experience, I find that children learn with different learning styles. Multiple intelligences play a big role in their learning.…

Creating a successful school site involves many aspects of the "school community" to be involved. The school's community consists of students, faculty, staff, parents, and community. In is tremendously important that school sites build a partnership with parents for different reasons, primarily increasing student achievement. As it has been expressed and several times, "Parent (and community) involvement are essential ingredients--perhaps the most crucial components--of building stronger schools," (Jackobson, 1997). Unfortunately, is has been reported that parent involvement is a largely "untapped resource" for schools to increase student achievement and a sense of community and commitment (Regional Education Laboratory, 2004). As a result, higher student achievement would have a positive effect on meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals and also increasing the schools Academic Performance Index (API). In addition to the many benefits of parent involvement there are also specific mandates for it. In fact, under the No Child Left Behind Act any school receiving Title I funds must develop and establish a descriptions of how they will involve parents in the development of plan and the overseeing of them (California Department of Education, 2004). In addition, Title I schools must also disseminate the schools parental involvement practices, pertinent information in regard to teacher qualifications, student achievement, hold meetings, and offer parent involvement at different times, among other things (California Department of Education, 2004). As there many obstacles that administrators in the K-12 arena…

I want to be a teacher for several different reasons. I initially decided teaching was for me when I was in middle school. I had an amazing teacher that helped me through a lot. She made a huge impact on my life, and I knew then that I wanted to be able to do the same for other kids. I later went on to have children of my own, which gave me even more reason to become a teacher. And even with the economy the way it is today, there are actually a lot of opportunities for teaching given the wide variety of jobs a teaching degree can obtain. I also understand the responsibility that comes with teaching and that the job doesn’t end when you leave the classroom. That is why I respect the teaching field as much as I do. I know I still have a long way to go before I get to my teaching career but I feel it will all be worth it when I get there.…

An educational institution performs a significant function of providing learning experiences to lead their students from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge. The key personnel in the institutions who play an important role to bring about this transformation are teachers. As stated by NCTE (1998) in Quality Concerns in Secondary Teacher Education, ―The teacher is the most important element in any educational program. It is the teacher who is mainly responsible for implementation of the educational process at any stage.‖ This shows that it is imperative to invest in the preparation of teachers, so that the future of a nation is secure. The importance of competent teachers to the nation‘s school system can in no way be overemphasized. The National Curriculum Framework 2005…
