Furthermore, I bet all of you can agree that we have a much more positive attitude towards school in the beginning of the year, than in the end. By the end of the year the majority of us are itching to get out of this school and begin our long-awaited summer vacation. Without summer vacation, there would be nothing to look forward to, therefore we would focus more on our school work and succeed all throughout the year, rather than just in the beginning. Many of you are probably thinking, you just said, “Without summer vacation, there would be nothing to look forward to,” and you expect…

For over 100 years, most schools have adhered to a traditional summer vacation schedule which stemmed from our primitive technological resources and advancements. However, as technological growth was made schooling throughout the year became more practical and thus the concept of a year-round schedule was introduced. With year-round schedules now becoming ever more prevalent and traditional schedules becoming slowly obsolete, a debate has sparked between the merits of the two. This debate has involved comparing the different advantages and disadvantages of the two schedules. While a traditional summer vacation may…

In the world of politics, one of the most important things is who you know. Knowing people will bring a politician success. Chris Matthew stressed one-on-one communication and “retail politics” in this first chapter of his book. He knows firsthand because he was in Washington for many years observing and learning. Not only is it necessary to know as many people as possible, but it is also important to make the person feel that their concerns are cared for on a personal level. Knowing people is not only important in the political world, but it is also important in the real world. The more people you know, the more opportunities will arise for you. In the book Chris Matthew talks about how many popular politicians rose to the top because they made the effort to get to know everyone, especially those who are important. This can apply to any work environment. Networking is a very important part of life. It is important for all of us to remember to treat each person with care because they will potentially be important in our lives.…

It can be hard for us to consistently give our best effort in school if there is not a longer weekend. It can be difficult for us to wake up early in the morning, before there is light outside, and efficiently work for seven hours at school. A longer weekend can help us gain more sleep time and relax from our previous week at school. Some of us may use this extra break to catch up on school work. Sometimes we may need a longer weekend to go on small vacations. A longer weekend can us time to pursue a job to earn some extra money for the many things that us teenagers must have. A longer weekend gives us more time to make choices on our own, instead of always being instructed by the school system.…

Frequent breaks in the school year allow students and teachers to recharge themselves, be more active in class, and have higher academic achievement. Students and teachers can get tired if they have ongoing class for ten months without a break big enough to recharge. Some of the illnesses that people could have fought off when they were fully rested could make them sick and make more people absent (edweek.org). Absences due to illnesses can be sustained by year round school because of the time to recharge and can raise their academic achievement by having more time in class than when they would usually be sick. Although summer vacation may be fun, having frequent breaks in the school year can help students retain their knowledge and have higher academic achievement (nea.org). Retaining knowledge because of shorter summer breaks…

Many parents use summer activities as childcare while they are working. Such as summer camps. But when the students are out on break when these camps are not in session, parents would be forced to find other child care at a costly price (“Year Round Schools Pros and Cons”). Year round schooling could also interfere with these camps. So students would not be able to attend camps such as boy scouts, girl scouts, and enrichment camps that they may use in their future lives because they would be in school. Another problem is that parents and families reject the year-round schooling and the schools lose the cooperation of the families. Year round schooling also makes it difficult to plan summer vacations or even to find family time. The students must constantly be worrying about homework after school and also want to hang out with friends. This causes them to spend less and less time with their parents and siblings. This family time is very important for the student and the families health. Students need the support and guidance of their family to stay on the right track and do the right things. Lots of family time comes during summer break. When the students don’t have to worry about homework and can hang out with their friends during the day and then spend time with their families at night ("Year-Round School Pros and Cons."). If we take away this summer break students and family would not be spending enough quality family time together without missing school and this is not good for their well-being or their…

Summer breaks can cause “summer slide” which is the decline of academic skills and knowledge over a long vacation. This shows that going to year-round school won’t make you forget over a long vacation. This also shows that if you don’t forget over a long vacation that you can improve your academic skills since you don’t have long breaks. All in all year-round schooling can improve a student’s skills and knowledge.…

If students are away from school for a shorter amount of time, they will not forget information and will remember how to work properly. For example, if students are away for a long time, they will forget how to work and act in the school environment. However, if they are not of as long, then they will remember more and act properly in school. Staying in school for longer periods of time will make students get better grades. When students stay in school and work more, they will have more practice and perform better on tests, leading to students obtaining better grades. Finally, with summer break shortened, school life will ultimately improve. With students being in school together for longer time frames, they will have to be around each other longer, and that will cause new friendships to be made and relationships to form. As the old saying goes, “ Friends in high school are friends for life.” Some people say that summer break should not be shortened and school should not go year round. This is wrong because when summer break is shortened and school goes year round, students ultimately benefit because their grades improve and they retain information over the…

“Schools out!” The majority of schools in America stick to the traditional school year, attending class from early fall through the beginning of summer. End of the school year means the start of summer vacation for most students; over the years, summertime evolved into its own culture with specialized camps, family vacations, and little league games. While most would agree that children and even families love summer vacation, many are aware of its downfalls. One downfall is the difficulty students have retaining knowledge and information from the previous year. Typically, teachers spend the first six weeks of the new school year reviewing material from the last instead of moving on to the new material. The department of education has indicated the need for change. According to the Education Secretary Arne Duncan, President Barak Obama has called for a longer school year to help American students compete with students around the globe (Dessoff, 36). The future of America is in the hands of today’s youth. Students that attend year round schools are at an advantage over students that attend traditional schools in the area of knowledge retention and access to quality teaching staff.…

Year-round schooling is a new method of education. It has been developed to help students achieve higher grades, and have a better learning experience. The basis around this is to eliminate the alleged “summer learning loss.” The hope is that students will retain more information without having such a long break. The number of school days would stay the same, yet there would be more frequent, shorter breaks throughout the year. Although the predicted results of YRE (year round education) are highly probable and justifiable, the regular schooling system is the better option. The year-round system is likely to create more problems than benefits for the students, parents and educators. Consequences of the new system include lack freedom for families to use the summer holiday to their personal preferences, excessive expenses for the government, school boards and parents, and a greater chance for students to fall behind. All these consequences would just create more stress on everyone involved. Surveys have stated that the majority of the population like the school year the way it is traditionally.(insert site about survey) Why should we change a system that has been in place and running smoothly for a long time, for a new system with the potential to cause greater problems in the future and that may or may not help students?…

    Year Long School Year

Many schools in the United States are beginning to change their school calendar so their students attend class all year round. The changes still allow the students time off in the summer, but they do not have the three months of break most students in America receive traditionally. Instead, they get a break of a couple weeks in the summer, and the remainder of the time is divided up and put into other breaks throughout the year. All schools in America should switch to a year-round calendar to accommodate the different and higher level of learning needed to be successful in our changing world and society. The traditional school system was designed many years ago when our country was an agricultural nation. Therefore, the school calendar was developed having a long break in the summer so students could assist their family with cultivating crops and other aspects of farm life. The traditional school calendar was not a calendar for higher learning, and should be extended to meet the needs of modern day students. There are many explanations as to why the traditional school calendar should be changed.…
