why students cheat
Topic: Why students cheat? It is generally believed that the problem of cheating in exam is not a new challenge to schools’ authorities in Vietnam. But academic dishonesty was not concerned as a striking issue for the government until Doi Ngo Scandal happened in May 2012. The biggest question is: why do students cheat? You can have a list of answers for that question, but in my opinion, the main ones can be listed as following. Lack of skill, knowledge and ability to pass the exam is the first reason that makes some students cheat. Some students don’t have enough self-confidence, others are simply so lazy that instead of studying hard, paying attention to classes, spending time reviewing lessons and doing exercises, they try to cheat. On the other hand, there are some subjects which are too hard for students to pass without academic dishonesty. We have boring books and outdated teaching methods that gradually make students feel more and more exhausted after every single lecture. History is a typical example. The second reason that makes some students cheat is the fear of failure. When they fail an exam, they have to face not only the disappointment from their parents who have already put so much pressure on them but also the obsession of being looked down by their friends. In addition, most students are affected by the educational environment. In a class where everyone cheats for better results, if you are the only exception, you will be seen as the nerd who deserves being alienated from other “normal students”. Owing to the thought that everyone cheats at one time or another, some students believe that their action is not wrong at all.
Last but not least, our society values education very high. Good grades can determine your future, and going to college to get a degree seems to be the only key to success nowadays, therefore students see cheating as a way to expand their job opportunities in real life. That conception has existed for years, and it leads to

Students have lost confidence in themselves and are now being walked over by others. I hear common stories from my classmates about how someone cheated off of their homework or test, but they don’t want to say anything to the teachers. They have allowed themselves to assume the role of the pushover. The cheaters in this situation are sometimes talked into it by their friends. They are told the only way to pass a teachers class is to cheat, or that “it’s only homework,” or the classic, “a class that cheats together, passes together.” By encouraging my friends to always reject those trying to use them for answers, there has been a decrease in cheating in our classes. If students across the country were the ones to go out and preach not cheating, our society would be much better off. Instead of saying, “a class that cheats together, passes together,” students should be saying, “a class that stays together, goes to the unemployment office together.” The habit of cheating and following the crowd in school will follow students into their future endeavors. Students have failed to make the connection between their actions now and their lives down the line. Though they may get a passing grade now, students are depriving themselves of knowledge the will need to be successful in the long run. For these reasons, it is necessary to encourage students to speak out against cheating. Doing so would…

Either, they don’t realise how smart they are, or maybe they are just scared of hard work and failure? In reality, the main reason why students cheat is because they: “didn’t think they could accomplish what they wanted to any other way”. But is the goal really accomplished, when it is accomplished with fraud? Plagiarism is so common that some people even write papers in ex-change for money. As it is told in the article: “Professor Donald Downs (…) met a man who “told me he felt like he had taken my courses.” A puzzled Downs asked the man what he meant. “He told me, ‘I’ve written about 20 papers for your…

Some of the main causes for cheating are pressure and parental expectations (Psychology Today, 9). In a world like todays, the majority of students are competing to get scholarships for their higher education due to the expensive tuitions universities demand. In order to get the scholarships, students must achieve a tremendously high GPA. Students are competing for high grades to get into a leading college with a scholarship, so cheating seems tempting when all the hard work accumulates (Current Events, 3). Less work for the same grade, and sometimes even higher. Other students may cheat to build an impressive resume for some other reason (Current Event, 3). Students also work incredibly hard to keep up what their parents expect of them. Parents expect a lot from their children. They may even pressure their children to get good grades or else they will be grounded, spanked, etc. Students, being saturated with work, see cheating as a helping hand to keep up with their parental expectancies. Peer Pressure also contributes to cheating (Psychology Today, 9). Students see other classmates cheating and getting away with it. If everyone does it, why shouldn’t?…

In a student’s college life he/she will face many situations where he/she will be tested on ethical values. The most common unethical practice done by students is that they cheat in exams; they may do this by gaining illegal access to the questions before the actual exam, use of mobile phones during a written exam etc. Mostly outside pressures lead a student to cheat. Mark Clayton in his book, A whole lot of cheating going on, states “Students say time and workload pressure are major factors spurring academic dishonesty, followed by parental pressure.” Example: In Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, pressure from parents is at an all time high specially when it comes to education. Moreover most undergraduate students are involved in many different activities in addition to studies, these are their social lives, extra curricular activities, he/she may be working part time, just to name a few. Thus the time available to spend on studies is minimized and the student would definitely feel the pressure leading him/her to cheat in the exam for an easy pass. This will eventually become a habit and will affect the person negatively when he/she starts a job, they will keep trying to find quicker and illegal solutions to complete their work which would label them as an unethical person in their field of work. Santa Clara University, in their article ‘Top Ten Ethical Issues for College Freshmen’ gave another reason for students cheating, it is stated “how bad is it to copy the homework for a class you’ll never use in your professional life?” - See more at:…
