why speeches are bad
It’s that time of the year again. It’s that time of the year where we have to write a speech, plain old useless speech which we are never going to use again. Hi my names ------------ and I’m going to talk to you about public speaking and how painful and pointless it is.
The time it takes to write a speech is frustrating and annoying, you spend days writing your speech or if your one of those kids who can’t be bothered writing a speech, because of how frustrating it is. You spend one of your busy nights trying to find a decent speech to copy off the internet, don’t worry Mr/mrs ---------- I didn’t copy this speech off the internet, I can’t say the same for the rest of the class though.
Then there’s the speaking side of your public speech, the part where you spend the night before printing cue cards, rehearsing it around the house, you then get to your big day you feel prepared you’ve rehearsed you have even brought your cue cards to school. Then there’s your big moment and you forget everything you have rehearsed, you just had last year’s public speaking champion speak before you. The butterflies in your stomach are going mad. You start reading your speech, you start stuttering so much that you keep your head down and start reading off your cue cards which are really just your speech cut up into several pieces. You finish your speech and wait for your feedback and all you get is C.
Teachers will argue with you that public speaking isn’t pointless that it will help you in the future, that maybe so but is it worth spending 4 weeks of school. Two of which are school holidays. Is it worth it?
My name is ---------------- and this is why I think public speaking is pointless and painful.

My advice to anyone giving a speech is to stick to the subject and be passionate about what you talk about. Make sure you have plenty of facts as we as personal stories to back your speech up. Relax, breathe and don’t’ talk too fast. People want to know what you are saying and why you are saying it. Make the speech fun yet informing so that the audience doesn’t have time even to think about nodding off. Start strong and end strong, so the audience knows that you’re still just as…

I hate public speaking. What’s the point of it? All it does is force people to unwillingly say something against their will. It’s “fun” they all said. It’s good to share your ideas with people. But do I look like I’m having fun right now? No. Do I look like I’m up here talking to you because I want to? No. Canada is supposed to be a free country. A country where we’re allowed to do anything, be our own person without anybody forcing us. But this, public speaking? This isn’t freedom. This is the opposite of what Canada as a country stands for. Even now, if you look closely, my hands are shaking from fear, and I’m looking at my speech through tears. I know many of you must be thinking how everything I’m saying is exaggerated, just so I can make a good speech, but no. This is really how public speaking is…

They say that for expertise or success in public speaking you must possess these three elements 1.) Content – Message packed with practical, easy to remember and useful information, 2.) Confidence - Knowing that what you share will be valuable and useful, and that you are the one to share it, and 3.) Connection - You must be able to draw the audience into the message. When on-stage speaking in front of a group of people may not seem so bad, unless you are unprepared to speak then it may become extremely nerve racking. Delivering a speech is easier for some than for others; however, it may be difficult for anyone who is ill prepared. Some ways you can be unprepared is by not spending your time writing your speech, getting all the facts straight and in order. This results in your work remaining incomplete. Also if you do not rehearse you are more likely to make a mistake or say something that doesn’t contribute to the subject of your speech.…

I used to worry a lot about public speaking, afraid I’d stumble over my words or just generally sound like a fool whenever I’d address a group of people. I was very much out there in my Circle of Concern. Eventually, I decided to step back into my Circle of Influence, which I did by joining Toastmasters five months ago. Now I’m able to speak and communicate comfortably…
