This is Ecuador, called this because it lies right along the equator. Half of the country is part of the Amazon basin, and the other is part of the Andes mountain range. Ecuador is also on the coast of South America, along the plates that are shifting and the same plates that caused the Andes. We should care about Ecuador because it is a provider for oil, closer to the United States than our other providers of oil in the Middle East. The large oil companies are risking not only the environment in the Amazon, but the tribes and other people who happen to be living in these areas where oil is being pumped out of the ground.
