Why School Should Start Later Essay

Later Morning Start Would you like to start the school day later than 8:00a.m.? Or even wake up a little bit later than usual? Or would you like to be able to concentrate betting your classes for better grades? Well, according to Scientific American, schools that start 8:35 or later have seen grades in math, English, science, and social studies rise. For the sake of teenagers and schools, I personally think we should be starting at a later time. By starting school later, teens will be able to get the sleep they need to preform their very best the next day. According to Jennifer LeComte, director of the Pediatric program at Christian Care's Wilmington Hospital Health Center, students should get between eight and nine hours of sleep. Bad sleeping habits can lead to am increase in depression. With very little amount of sleep, students tend to act out or become very angry and have a harder time focusing in their classes. Not getting enough sleep at night can lead to mental and physical health problems, along with an increase in car accidents and a decline in academic courses.

In today's society teenagers have homework, extracurricular activities, jobs, and social media to keep them busy during the evening. The AAP, or American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends pediatrician so counsel teens and parents about healthy sleeping habits, and enforce a media curfew. The AAP urges schools to start at a time where teens ca. Get eight and a half to nine and a half hours of sleep at night. Many studies show that an average of adolescents in the United Sates are chronically sleep deprived and pathologically sleepy. These are the most common, and easily fixable public health issues in the U.S. today. By starting school later we could prevent serious health issues, and be able to improve the amount of sleep that teenagers should be
