Why School Should Start Later
Beep! We all dread that early morning alarm that goes off to tell us it’s time to get ready for school. We wish we could just go back to sleep and carry on with our day later, but we know that time won’t wait for us. Most schools start earlier in the morning, sometime in between seven or eight o’clock. Some people think that this is too early and that school needs to start later, whereas some feel that it is fine at the time it now starts. I believe that school should remain at the time of day it currently is, because it leaves more time after school for activities, it is more convenient for parent schedules, and it is more realistic to a college or job schedule. When the end of school bell rings many students get on their bus and go home, …show more content…
They may believe this because teens naturally go to sleep later so if they have to wake up early then they won’t get enough sleep to focus in school. Not being able to focus will cause teens to get worse test scores and their grades will drop. The time that a teen goes to sleep is controlled by his or herself, if they want to be able to get enough sleep then all they have to do is go to sleep earlier. If school were to get pushed to later in the day it is likely that teens will just start going to sleep even later, because they know they won’t have to wake up until later. This is similar to why people stay up later on the weekends than they do on the weekdays. In conclusion instead of changing the time that the entire school starts and ends, it would be easier to just start going to bed earlier so that we can learn and have time for our extracurriculars. School staying the same time that it currently starts is more convenient for students, parents, teachers, and the community. I believe that school should remain at the time of day it currently is, because it leaves more time after school for activities, it is more convenient for parent schedules, and it is more realistic to a college or job

In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.…

Therefor I don’t think our school board should add time to each school day. I think we should keep our schedule starting at 7:30 and ending at 2:30. That way we can get home do chores, play and go to any afterschool activities. If we changed our school hours that would interfere with parents/guardians work schedules. Now with the schedules our school has we don’t get to restless with the teachers or other…

Do you feel like school should be started later in the morning? Well, the school should start later. Instead of school starting in 6:30, maybe it should start at 8. I think that starting the school day later would greatly benefit the students and teachers. if we started school at about say nine thirty in the morning instead of eight thirty or earlier, that would mean that most students wouldn't need to be awake in the morning till almost seven thirty to eight thirty and some kids could even wake up a little later then that depending on where they live. granite it is proven that high school students only need six to eight hours of sleep each night but there is always that few that never get the six to eight hours of sleep.…

One reason schools should start later is because of the importance of how students could more effortlessly become involved with school. By starting school later, it would allow students to score higher in their core classes because students are able to get more sleep, which results in increased performances (Wahlstrom 10). To further support this, Wahlstrom mentions in a study done in multiple different high schools, “Statistically significant increases in the 1st period grade point average in one or more core courses of English, math, social studies, and science with start times from 8:00-8:30 [in the morning]” (11). She then continues with, “Significant increases in grade point average in all 1st-period core courses for all semesters in all grades in Jackson Hole High School in Wyoming, with a start time of 8:55 [in the morning]” (11). This…

By doing so, students would be more alert and wanting to learn, and they can become successful. An issue that comes along with changing the high school hours are the diverse amounts of after school activities. With ending school later, these activities would have to end later also. A teenager's natural sleep clock wants to go to bed later anyway, so it would not affect that teenager if he or she gets home late. For intense, a teenager who plays volleyball is used to getting out of practice at 5:30 p.m., instead she would get out at 7:30 p.m.. She would still have time to go home and do homework and other things and would not have to worry about going to bed or waking up early because of her natural sleep clock. With this not being an issue, high schools need to change their hours to being later. Many students would be positively changed mentally and physically if schools adapted to their natural sleep clocks. Students would be a lot more energized and ready to take on the day. In conclusion, there are a variety of benefits for teenagers that come with high school classes…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…
