Some people may think that obesity is not a choice, however it is a lifestyle choice. Robert Atkin once said ,“how much obesity has to be created in a single decade for people to realize that diet has to be responsible for it.” Obese people …show more content…
are unaware that what they put into their bodies has a serious effect on them. This is important because what obese people eat is the main cause for their overweightness. Dr. C. Everett Koop said, that “except for smoking, obesity is now the number one preventable cause of death in this country. Three hundred thousand people die of obesity every year.”This shows that obesity is a real concern for the next generations to come. This is important, because many obese people are responsible for their actions. The way they choose to live their lives is their choice and they should not concern other people with the results of their actions. Obesity is the result of the way people choose to live their lives.
Some people believe that being obese is to have the perfect life, but it makes it hard for them to reach their full potential.
Lisa K. Diamond said, that “studies have found depression to correlate with the onset of obesity and obesity to predict the onset of depression.”Obesity can cause many disadvantages that makes it hard for people to live their lives to the fullest. Some people that are obese may be ashamed to go out in fear of what others may think of them. They could end up becoming self ashamed and that may even cause depression. This is important, because besides their health issues it may cause mental issues as well. Ashley New Year, who is considered to be an obese person stated that, “being obese makes normal things that everyone else does more challenging for someone her size.” This shows that there are many disadvantages. Obesity can take a serious toll on someone’s life. It’s an everyday struggle that these individuals have to deal with. It makes it hard for them to stand, and do easy things such as walking and bathing. Being obese is not perfect, in fact it has many downsides that may prevent them from becoming their best
selves.
Some may say that obesity is a result of overeating, but that is not true for all. Some particular individuals do no not have a choice on whether or not they are obese. There are two main medical issues that are directly related to obesity. According to an article, ¨Hypothyroidism is a condition were the thyroid gland in the neck produces too little thyroid hormones. Too little of this hormone results in slow metabolism resulting in obesity¨ (Martin). This shows that in many cases obesity cannot be controlled, but rather is an outcome of an underlying medical condition. This is important because not every person who looks obese may be at fault. In addition, obesity can be directly linked to Cushing’s Syndrome. As an article states, Cushing Syndrome ¨is when the adrenal gland in the kidney produces an excess amount of a hormone called cortisol. This leads to fat build up in the face, abdomen, and upper back.¨ (Martin) This shows that there are other conditions that can lead to obesity. This is important because this is proof that there are medical explanations for being obese. Not all people have a say in the choice to be obese or not, sometimes it is just a part of the way they were raised or a medical condition that they ended up with.
Obesity should not be considered a disability, because it takes away from those who do not have a choice, creates excuses for those to not reach their full potential, and it is a lifestyle choice. Obesity should not be considered a disability for many reasons. For the most part being obese is a choice not something that people end up with. It is a result of their actions, because of this obesity should not be considered a disability.
