If you didn’t recognize that quote, it was from the famous Shia LaBeouf video. I know that my reenactment was hilarious, but I think there was a real message in that quote that I want you to think about. Think of something you want to do and think about the quote “just do it!”. People always say that they will do it tomorrow or soon, but I am talking about doing it now. With me being elected, I promise that I will make change in our chapter. One of my ideas includes changing our Stand UP, since it is hard to relate to those who are in poverty and homeless. We can change our Stand UP cause to working…
The author voice of authority when he said people with wealth surplus should not buy new stuffs or spend it on luxuries, any money not spent on necessities should be given away to people suffering from poverty so dire to be life threatening. He further logically claimed that a $ 1000 value suit could save the life of 5 children. 5. The author used pathos when he distinguished the value of a child’s life to a vintage car. The money saved for giving up on dining out when donated could help save the lives of kids overseas.…
The importance of speech, language and communication is the ability to express thoughts and feelings and to be able to develop friendship bonds. The ability to communicate effectively underpins most other aspects of life including, learning, social emotional and behavioural.…
So I started to protest. During my teenage years I , I protested the injustices of the world in my ninth grade history class, then on an online blog. Then I moved on to going public with my views, and found others who appreciated them. Later on I went on to become the mayor of that small town I grew up in, and then the governor of the whole state. Which was surprising, considering I’m from the Libertarian party.…
In a philanthropy group I’m affiliated with, we worked to raise funds for nonprofits, so we’ve had to decide on how we would raise money and which non-profits we would give it to. We each provide suggestions and argue for why they deserve some amount of the money we had raised. One of the non-profits I was arguing for ended up receiving some of the money we raised. I needed to use my communication skills in order to argue for my point and convince others to come to my side to some extent. We were required to argue for who should receive funding based on the limited amount of money we had to distribute in a meaningful way. In order to get this, I had to be able to influence and contribute to the group by giving them a suggestion for where to…
The author of the picture essay “Call for Donations” was demonstrated by U4Others. This photo essay is basically about a guy who is standing outside making donations. Some people pass by and ignore him, and others stop and make a donation. The theme is about doing something you are passionate about and helping others. For example on page 11 , “How one chooses to answer that call depend on their personal experiences, their availability, their financial stability or even their passion for a cause.”The guy making donations is cheerful and happy because he has a passion for it. He’d frown at people passing, sticking their hand up and completely ignoring the sign for what the cause is. Others stopped and made a donation and his smile grew wider. The target audience is teenagers and adults. Most of us ignore signs and…
Keith Gilyard in his book Voices of the Self states a position about pluralism in education. Giving his own experience as well as others within the educational system as an example, Gilyard demonstrates what can happen if schools only acknowledge, accept, and represent the culture of the majority. Gilyard, as an African-American boy suffered the uprooting from his atmosphere to be placed in a ?divided by two? new environment. After he finished first grade, he and his family moved from Harlem to Queens. Both White-American and African-American children inhabited his new neighborhood, but they were divided in different school districts. Since his family lived within the range of the school where all White-American children lived; he had to attend that school. There was where the author started to feel the separation from his culture. Gilyard states that there are many other cultures other than the White-American in the U.S., such as the African-American culture, as well as different languages other than English, such is the Black English (a dialect from English), and they ought to be accepted in schools. The non-acceptance of children's culture in school will lead, for Gilyard, to loss of identity within school, and consequently to a search for one's identity in other places that may lead to bad experience in life. Moreover, Gilyard pursues goes beyond the school system when he talks about pluralism. With many references about American history during the late 60?s, he shows the pluralism within American society and the consequences of the non-acknowledgement, non-acceptance, and disrespect of this multiculturalism within this society.…
Persuasion is the result of both cognitive and affective processes. Rational appeal uses logical arguments and factual evidence to persuade a person. Factual evidence can be in the form of statistics or personal testimonies. Individuals are persuaded by stories if the stories are good even when arguments are weak. In a rational appeal, only strong arguments lead to attitude change (Escalas, 2007). People presented with personal narrative of a health risk viewed themselves as being more at risk and said they were more likely to get tested than those presented with statistical information (deWit, Das, & Vet, 2008). For a person who smokes, the commercial that has the lady with the trachea in her throat explaining the reason she has it because she smoked has a very powerful message, because it not only tells her story it shows her story. When I first saw the commercial I wanted to quit smoking in that moment, but it is…
The most influential experience in my life has been, participating in giving back to the homeless during the Christmas holiday. During this experience, I've had the pleasure of feeding the homeless and giving Christmas gifts to the less fortunate children. This influenced me to want to help others and to be more humble. When I was participating in helping others I felt that I was making a difference in my community. Instead of being selfish I set time aside to help the ones who really need helping. While helping the less fortunate I learned that I would be selfish if I did not stay humble, I have learned that helping others is a part of what I want to do for as long as I can. In my experience of all the people that I've seen, I have realized…
The voice is the writer coming through the words, the sense that a real person is speaking to us and cares about the message. It is the heart and soul of the writing, the magic, the wit, the feeling, the life and breath. When the writer is engaged personally with the topic, he/she imparts a personal tone and flavor to the piece that is unmistakably his/hers alone. It is that individual something, different from the mark of all other writers, that we call voice.…
Expressing what I feel is important to me plays into my character. During seminars and class discussions, I voice my opinions because I am a firm believer in doing so. Honesty, perseverance and compassion define me as a person. As a result, these characteristics have helped me succeed in my academic career.…
The main point of Do It Anyway was not quite activism but advocacy, to get an important point across through supporting those in need. Courtney E. Martin interviewed eight people’s journey to advocacy and the last story stood out me the most. Dena Williams was an eighth grade teacher in Bronx, New York who believed in every single student in her class. When I read her story, I felt some sort of connection to her. Suddenly, I realized that I had a math teacher in tenth grade who believed in me that I could get an A in her class. Without her support, I would not have gotten that A in her class. In seminar class, I learned that there was a difference between activism, advocacy, solidarity, and charity. Now, after learning this, I could see how Dena Williams was an advocate for the children in her class and how she and her students were a solidarity in her community. These two things, advocacy and solidarity combined, changed my views on helping others in my community.…
As Elbow states “In your natural way of producing words there is a sound, a texture, a rhythm-a voice- which is the main source of power in your writing”(84). The voice is the force that makes the reader listen to what is they are reading, it is the energy that brings the meaning to the reader.…
People complain everyday about the problems in this world, and I am one of them. One of my complaints is about people who complain!. I have a high respect for those who take actions to try to solve these problems instead of complaining. Being a part of this community, we all share the responsibility of helping and supporting each other. We have to do our best to give the helping hand and draw smiles. This is exactly what the term “community service” means. Many people think that volunteering is just hours they need to do for the school, and some of them feel like that they are forced to volunteer. But to me, volunteering is more than this. To volunteer is to make a change. I thought that this change should be in the world, society or someone’s life. But in fact, what I never thought about is that this change is going to be in my life.…
