Why Kids Should Not Be Taught In School

Kids across America all compete in many different kinds of sports. Whether it be soccer, baseball, football, hockey, basketball, track, and many more. From what I have been taught in school, only the winner and second and third would usually receive medals for their accomplishments and success in their certain sport. While I am still encouraging kids to play sports and be active and fit, people should not be rewarding kids for just participating in a sport or even getting last place.

Teaching kids that even if you fail at a sport you will still get a reward is a bad thing. Carol Dweck, a Stanford psychology professor plainly says, “No, kids should not get be given trophies simply for participating.” By teaching this to kids at a young age will reflect on their adult life. Even when people that are taught this at a young age are in the workforce and fail at something, they still think it will be
My idea is to still give the kids small medals for participating, but give the winner a larger more extravagant looking trophy. By seeing what the winner got for working hard, the kids will want to work harder to achieve the bigger trophy. When kids see that alls they got for participating is a small plain looking trophy and they see the winner get a huge cool looking trophy, it will encourage them to try and work harder and do better to try and win the better looking trophy. Overall, I believe that giving kids trophies for just participating is a bad thing. At a young age, kids have to learn to lose or just participate and get no reward for it. Winning and getting a trophy for it teaches them that if they do a good job and are successful at their certain sport, they will be rewarded for it. Losing teaches kids a great asset in life because life isn't all about sunshine and candy and rainbows. Life is tough and kids have to learn quickly that failure just another part of
