One reason is that kids are getting pressured. ¨In a competitive culture, a child is told that it is not good enough to be good. You must triumph over others” (Kohn 1). This means that a kid gets pressured
into being really good and not having respect for others. The 2nd piece of evidence is “It is an incredibly complicated sport you can’t be a dummy and make it at any position in the NFL.” (Pope,1). This shows that kids are being pressured by bad grades and not being smart. The 3rd piece of evidence is “I did not perform well in my debut as kicker with all looking on, it was one of the most pressure filled moments of my life.” (Pope,1). This says that you must be good not to be laughed at or made fun of.
Another reason is that kids are overdoing themselves. “These athletes are afraid they will not get a scholarship unless they go to clinics.” (Owen,1). This means that kids think they have to go out and visit clinics and colleges a lot and perform at high levels while there. “Every year more that 3.5 million kids under the age of 15 require medical treatment for sports related injuries.”(Brody,1). This means that they are being injured by overdoing muscles in the body. “Too often the goal is skewed towards adult goals.” (Brody,1) Which means that they are overdoing themselves for parent acceptance, or because they are parents are trying to win at all costs.
Critics may argue that your kid is better off going outside and getting his energy out. They say this because your kid is getting exercise and sunlight. But too much of that will hurt your child. “They got turned off at a young age.” (Stensen,1). Which means that they overdid themselves and got hurt. At a young age could mean not playing ever again.
This is why competitive sports burnout kids This is also why critics may argue that it is good for your kid. But they are wrong. There is a lot of pressure and kids overdoing themselves in competitive sports. So to make it a better world do not let your kid play competitive sports.
