A sense of belonging can emerge from the connections made with people, places and the larger world. It is connections that influence where one searches for meaning in ones lives and ultimately where one belongs. This is shown throughout the short film ‘The Lost Thing’. When Tan uses “The Lost Thing” as a salient object it portrays the message that not everyone feels affiliated within a community. It is clearly portrayed throughout the short film that the creature and the central character…

Imagine a child in a large shopping area, like the Mall of America with their parents. Their most important task is to not get lost because of the fear of isolation. I was that child. When I was younger my family went to the Mall of America and we got put into a situation of being broken off from each other. Everyone in my group was afraid, my parents were freaking out because no one could get ahold of anyone. We all were flustered because we did not want to be alone and did not want to be lost in such a large place. This led to us crying and freaking out due to the stress and isolation that had been pushed upon us. Many variations of American Literature can directly tie to this idea of isolation. All the pieces of literature we have studied this year have a common theme, that the fear of isolation leads to emotional pain in the life of the characters.…

I leave behind the howling winds, the turbulent waves and the worry of my death as I crawl slowly in hunger and pain upon this new shore. I can feel the hot sun burning a sensation of warmth into my skin. I know that I can start a whole new life here. I have left everything behind in my war-torn country including what meant most to me; my very own recorder given to me by my great grandmother. She had taught me this one tune that will never leave my mind because the tune makes me feel a sense of fulfilment that I can’t feel with anything else.…

My love of cultures didn’t blossom overnight; instead, on a thirteen-hour plane ride, I began, unknowingly, the longest journey of my life. At the age of eight, my large eyes darted back and forth across the aisles, trying to find comfort among the sea of peculiarity. As the plane flew over the vast Atlantic Ocean, farther and farther away from home, I felt lost and vulnerable. Most kids dream of flying 30,000 feet over land, but for me, this flight was a nightmare. I had left everything I had known; my friends, family, and identity, thousands of miles behind. Standing barely four feet tall, my eyes sagged, and my shoulders shrugged. Not because of the newly acquired jet-lag, but because of the hollowness within. My Israeli name carried no weight anymore, rather it floated like the plane, high above the sea, in the middle of nowhere.…

This is seen in ‘As You Like It’ by Duke Senior’s sense of refuge in the Forest of Arden, Duke Fredericks dis-attatchment to others living in the court and Jaques inability to find a sense of self in either the court or the Forest of Arden due to his lack of connection to any certain place.…

Depending on an individual’s relationship with a place, their perceptions of belonging can be influenced, if there is a positive connection between an individual and a place, they will belong, however if there was a negative connection in the past or in the present, they will not. The theme of isolation is greatly explored in the poem ‘St Pats college’ by Peter Skryznecki, as it shows that a negative connection to a place will result in a lack of belonging, whereas his other poem, ’10 Mary Street ‘explores the theme of the progression of time and how a good connection can be warm, welcoming and provide a sense of belonging. With the use of various techniques such as symbolism, imagery and repetition these poems highlight how perceptions of belonging and being unable to belong can by influenced by a connection to places. The short film ‘The lost thing’ by Shaun Tan is also testimony to this.…
