Why Is A College Education Important to Me?
Henry Ford, said, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” For years, I thought I was just too old to return to school. However, for 20 years, I’ve worked in a career that provided great financial stability, but it never brought happiness. When I was laid-off, I made the decision to not return to the corporate world; instead, I started my process of becoming a successful counselor and motivational speaker. Spending time with my family and doing what makes me happy are my overall goals in life. So here I am forty-one and enrolled in college.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics the number of middle-aged people in college, graduate school or technical school is projected to rise to 4.1 million by 2015. I am proud to be a part of this statistic. I believe we can’t look back at what we should have done; we need to move forward and make the best out of what we can do now. This past June, I attended DePaul University School for New Learning Commencement Ceremony. Tecora Rogers, a 59 year old Masters Graduate gave the graduating class commencement address. While, I wish I can share her entire speech, the following is what stuck with me most. “For years I have worked in a corporate environment and promoted the values of others. I am at a point in my life where it is important to me to promote my own values as they relate to my community.” I felt she was talking to me. For years I’ve worked in the Marketing/Advertising industry promoted and watched others advance, while I stayed in the same position. If, Tecora can go back to school in her 50’s, I can go back in my 40’s. Vickey Kalambakai the author of The Advantages of Being an Older Student says, being an older student we know exactly what we want. While, Tecora wants to promote her values

In 2005 David Foster Wallace delivered the Kenyon College commencement address that was not the typical commencement address you would normally hear at a graduation. He starts off his speech by telling a story having the idea that even the most “important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about.” He talks about living in the adult world that these soon to be graduates will enter and how it can be very dull at times. And how learning about how to think about the choice we make in our life, the choices we make will impact our life whether it be a good impact, or a bad impact.…

According to Bringhamton University (2012), the largest and fastest expanding market segment for higher education is the adult learner. Universities and colleges need to adjust their infrastructure to attract better and serve adult learners. There is less high school graduates entering colleges versus the adult learner ("Demographics," 2012). With less traditional aged students and more non-traditional or adult learners there will be less public support, political leverage, and legislative support to finance an educational system that is designed primarily to serve the needs of traditional aged students without considering the special needs of a more age diverse student body ("Demographics,"…

    Upperclassmen Stereotypes

“Ugh, freshmen,” says Oscar Jaramillo, senior student at V.I.S.A, when passing by the halls between classes. Usually, younger people are seen as obnoxious, immature, annoying, and simply unready. For instance, it is a common prejudice for upperclassmen to think all freshmen are down right annoying. This stereotype may come from the never ending relationship between age and experience. “Age is just a number,” so why do employers keep asking for it? Age is simply one of the only things about you that can not be altered or changed. Are adults really mature? Or are they simply trying to live up to what society defines ‘grown up’? The same question can be asked with younger people, are they really reckless and worry free? Or do they not have enough expectations to live up to?…

Returning back to school at 43 has been one of the most rewarding, yet the most challenging experience. It did not take me long before I knew that this was exactly where I was supposed to be and what I needed to continue to progress in my life. Attending to school was all I wanted to do and I attempted to return on many occasions but there were always trials and hurdles that at the time I could not climb.…

On the night I shared the news of my nomination as one of EIU’s 2016 Top Black Achievers with my family, my younger cousin, Diana, sent me a message saying, “Congratulations. I aspire to be as great as you. You literally inspire me to try hard to be successful.” To which I responded, “Aspire to be even better!” I was moved beyond expression. Diana’s words made me realize that by remaining steadfast in my quest for educational enrichment, I am also positively influencing young people who look like me and come from similar socioeconomic backgrounds. My quest for education is sending the message that not only can they reach the doors of higher education, but they can work even harder and accomplish so much more. Coming from a social climate that either indirectly or…

High school, somehow, is an interesting chapter of a person’s life. Automatically, a teenager feels a lot older when entering high school. He or she feels more mature, or at least most teenagers. Since they feel older, they want to start doing things that they would not be allowed to do while being in middle school. They want to start going to more parties; their social lives become an important part of their lives. All they want to do is hang out with their friends, not do homework nor study for tests. They do not want to learn or at least listen to things that “will not benefit them” for whatever career they wish to pursue at that moment. According to them, that knowledge will not be used by them during their whole lives. Sean Covey is the vice president of Innovations and Products at FranklinCovey, which is an organization that devotes to helping individuals and other organizations achieve greatness; he also is a popular speaker to youth and adult groups. Caroline Bird’s essay “College is a Waste of Time and Money” explains her beliefs on why, for some people, going to college is an ineffective and inefficient use of their time. She states that many students do not belong in college because they are there for the wrong reasons and they are not happy learning. She also gives evidence to suggest that going to college and getting a degree does not actually allows a person to make more money in their life time. Her final claim is that college does not prepare most students for the real world and the jobs they will have once they graduate.…
