"Walt Disney"

Have you ever seen Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty or even Beauty and the Beast? If you have you may have immediately thought, those are Disney movies. Disney isn't just a name of a company; there is a person behind the name Disney. His name is Walter Elias Disney.

Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. Walt Disney was born to Elias and Flora Disney and had many siblings. Walt left high school in 1917 at the age of sixteen. He later attended classes the Kansas City Art Institute. Walt always wanted to be in the military. In 1918, Walt joined the American Ambulance Corps.

Margaret Winkler and her husband Charles Mintz had stolen the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. As well as stealing Oswald, they stole all of Walt's animators except for Iwerks. Walt, Roy, Ub and their wives created three short films starring a new character named Mickey Mouse. The first two were silent called plane crazy and the gallopin' gaucho. The third one that premiered was one of the first cartoons that had sound, and it was called Steamboat Willie. Mickey Mouse was an instant hit.

By this time, the Disney Brothers' studio had been re-named Walt Disney Productions. Disney had created a whole series with Mickey Mouse and some new friends who had been created as well such as Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto and Goofy. The series was called Silly Symphonies. The silliy symphonies won Walt his very first Oscar for the first cartoon in color. The cartoon that one was called flowers and trees. In 1937, Walt Disney Production released the very first animated full length movie called Snow White and the Seven Drawrfs. Even during the Great Depression, the movie still made 1.499 million dollars and won eight

While he actively engaged in all phases of creation in his films, he functioned chiefly as coordinator and final decision maker rather than as designer and artist. He later searched for a replacement for Oswald the lucky rabbit which happened to be a mouse names Mickey Mouse. He got the idea from a pet mouse he owned back when he was child in a farm in Missouri. But later in 1928 the biggest success came from the creation and release of “Steamboat Willie” which was the first film to include a synchronized soundtrack. Disney planned a bigger project which would be a movie lengthed cartoon in full color and music. Which cost a lot of money and was risky to make this became known as “Snow white and the seven dwarfs” which was released in 1937. It took three years to make it and it was Hollywood’s first animated film. He received a special Academy award for his talented work. After that more accomplishments where created like “Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi which each became a classic. Disney also made nature documents and live action films like “treasure island” and “20,000 leagues under the sea”. He was the first Hollywood studio to embrace the new medium of television with “The Mickey Mouse club” and “Walt Disney presents”. Disney wanted to create an amusement park but didn’t have enough money to create it. So in the early 1950’s he mortgaged his life insurance, stock holdings, house and furniture to purchase an orange grove near Anaheim, California and finance the construction of a 185 acre amusement park. That was named Disneyland and opened in July 17, 1955 it became of the world’s most popular tourist attraction.
