The popularity of texting has caused an unforeseen danger- texting while driving. It has been proven scientifically that texting while driving reduces your awareness by almost half, and that texting while driving is over four times more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol. These are very disturbing results for anyone on the road, especially since it has been proven that an estimated 65% of drivers are texting and driving every single day. There are some opponents of the new laws that punish drivers that text. Their primary argument is that texting while driving is the least of the dangers we have on the road compared to driving with under the influence of alcohol. We should continue to support the decisions that were made to ban the use of texting while driving. Such behavior has huge unintended consequences- serious injury or death of drivers and passengers but it also can lead to distractions while driving.…

According to Erin Shumaker, on average, about 9 Americans are killed every day from motor vehicle accidents that involve being distracted driving by using a cell phone, texting, or eating. So that means over 3,000 deaths per year are because of driver’s being distracted by their phones. Texting while driving is not only dangerous, but has become more mind controlling to younger people in today’s society more than ever. Shumaker adds in his article that the age group most likely to send a text or email while driving is the ages between twenty one and twenty four and the risk of crashing are four times more if using a cell phone. Certainly a discomforting statistic for most that would seemingly be made aware to younger age drivers, but only becomes more of a growing problem every year.…

There is rarely any legitimate reason to text and drive. The vast majority of the texts I receive and send are not life or death situations that require my immediate attention, but when I answer that text, I put myself in a life or death situation. I’m also failing in the responsibility that I and every other person takes up when they get behind the wheel, to drive to the best of my abilities in order to keep myself and those around me safe. It would hurt nothing if I was to simply ignore my phone for the duration of the trip, then answer any messages I’ve received. So by texting while driving, I’m putting at risk the lives of all around me, plus my own, all so that can have conversation that could…

I somewhat agree with your stance on the subject. It is indeed dangerous to use a cell phone in order to text while driving. It does make sense for the government to pass a law and prohibit texting and driving. I can understand some of the points that you have made concerning the issue of how people's privacy will be invaded. I agree that there is no way to tell for sure that a person is actually using a cell phone while driving. A car is barely visible when it comes to looking from the outside towards the inside which can explain why the police officer used in your example had trouble catching people texting while driving. Using your phone as a GPS is understandable, however, I believe that inputting a destination while one is driving over…
