Army Online and Social Media Conduct of the Army Soldier Soldiers are required to be professionals both on and off duty. So why wouldn’t we expect them to be professional both on and offline? Social media plays a huge role in most people’s lives, whether it be to connect with family or complete strangers. Social media and internet use has grown exponentially throughout the years (see Appendix for graphic of 2018 digital reports). Facebook reported last year 1.94 billion active user accounts a month, that is over a quarter of the world’s population (Popper, 2017). Social media websites such as Facebook have been used by Soldiers in the Army for nearly 20 years. Which is why it’s important that there are guidelines as to bring honor to the service and the men and women who serve the people of the United States. You are doing just that. Millions upon millions of people are perusing through posts about vacations, baby pictures, and your vehicle reviews on a recent purchase. This is the world we live in. The Army wouldn’t tolerate a Soldier standing up in front of thousands and blatantly disrespecting someone because they are different. They most certainly will not tolerate it online. Remember to think about what you are going to post, it could be seen by thousands, possibly millions of people. Type what is conducive to the Army Values. Post messages that are respectful to yourself and others. If you live by these simple steps, you should have no problem enjoying all that social media has to offer. Engage your Soldiers in your formations to police each other and their battle buddies up to stay consistent with the Army Values.
