Why Is Robert 1 Important
Robert 1 was very important in Scottish history. He was the first Scottish king to claim Scotland as a free country. He was very influential in the war against the English. He is a celebrated person in Scotland and in Ireland. He was a key role in making Scotland a free country. Robert 1 was born in the Turnberry Castle in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1274. He was the son of Robert the Bruce, Earl of Carrick. His mother has a legend around her saying that she kept Robert’s father imprisoned until he agreed to marry her. He was also grandson of Robert Bruce who had been one to go for the Scottish kingship. Robert 1 had nine siblings and all of them would be found in the courts. The same year the English king Edward 1 had claimed kingship over Scotland. Robert 1 was sided with the English because his rival clan was king of Scotland. Since they sided with the English king the Bruces had to leave their estates and go to a castle the English king provided them with. While living in Carlisle Castle he met his first wife, Isabella of Mar and married her in early 1296. The war for Scottish independence is about to begin. One of the fist blows in the war between Scotland and England was a attack against the Bruces. On March 26 1296 Scottish earls and their clans attacked Carlisle because their rivals the Bruces were living there. The English king was fed up with the Scottish so he invaded Scotland in March, 1296. His kingship began with Robert claiming that he was the rightful owner of the crown. His reign did not start well, his family was imprisoned and he vowed to get them back. While at war with the English he won many battles against them. He used guerilla warfare against the English’s large army. He became guardian of Scotland because of his valiant efforts in the war. Every battle he won he got back his kingdom back.
