A Myth is a traditional story, specifically one concerning early history of a people group explaining some natural phenomenon or social occurrence typically involving the supernatural. It comes from the Latin word mythus which means speech, thought, story, or anything delivered by word of mouth. Mythology is simply an attempt to answer the unknown. It implemented a sense of security to the ancients who could not explain the aspects of the universe with science or reason as we can today. These stories transformed ancient Greek and Roman cultures, creating literature, architecture and social laws. As society grew and new ideas were formed, mythology became exceedingly irrelevant. Soon Western cultures stopped worshiping a plethora of gods and replaced the fear of the unexplained with curiosity. At first ancient Greece was an oligarchy but it sooned turned toward elective representatives and became the first home of Democracy. The establishment of democracy might be the greatest achievement of the ancient world. In addition, the Greeks created the Olympics in order to please their gods. Athletes would compete in various challenges in front of a large audience with the purpose of bringing the utmost glory to the gods. Today the Olympics plays a key role in international relations in the world. It gives a sense of unity while also allowing countries to compete against each other.
Without mythology the modern world would not be as developed, nor as prosperous as it is today. Because of the gods of the Greeks and Romans western culture experienced many literary, architectural advances. In this society that continues to grow, so does the importance and relevance of studying
