Loyalty is extremely important within Odysseus’ world. Characters in The Odyssey will go as far as to die for their leader and or fellow men. If you are not loyal to your leader or a person of power, they could go as far as to kill you for disloyalty. For example, in all of book one of The Odyssey, Odysseus’ men die for Odysseus on countless occasions. To be more specific, when Odysseus was passing through the island with the lotus eaters, Odysseus’ men go out and explore the island for Odysseus. The men end up dying in the end. Disloyalty can get also get you into a lot of trouble. In book 2 of The Odyssey, the suitors are punished by their disloyalty toward Odysseus by immediate death.     An example of a slave in the Odyssey who is treated with value and is also portrayed as loyal is Eumaeus, the swineherd. Odysseus' disguise among other reasons in book 14 is in order for him to distinguish those that remain loyal to him despite his absence. In Book 14 when we first meet Eumaeus, he displays his loyalty to Odysseus by complimenting his master, commenting that he will never find a master as good as Odysseus and by demonstrating his dedication to his job despite his master's absence (he is even willing to sleep outside with his boars). This proves his loyalty particularly because he does this in the company of a disguised Odysseus. The ancient Greeks, aware of how long a master could be away from home due to war, would be able to understand Eumaeus' continuation of his work without the presence of Odysseus highlighting his value as an asset needed for the good of oikos. The audience realises Eumaeus' value to the family in Book 16 when he greets Telemachus on his return like a fond father would, showering him with kisses.     When Odysseus offers Zeus a prized Lamb’s thighbones, he refuses them, and Odysseus realizes his mistake. He states that “Zeus disdained my offering, destruction for my ships he had in store and death for those who sailed them.” He wanted absolutely nothing to do with him, which told Odysseus that he would have no guidance or protection from him; they would have to take the journey on alone. It was then that Odysseus knew that the voyage home would be difficult, and that he would have to prove himself by adhering to the god’s advice. The fact that Odysseus does not have Zeus on his side is extremely important, it means that Odysseus would have to prove himself by acting with restraint, the men’s lives depended on it. When Odysseus had a chance to return home with the remaining crew, he was still inclined to disobey the gods thinking that he could fight his way out of his destiny, something for which Circe berated him, saying, “Must you have battle in your heart forever?     Similar to most Homeric heroes, Odysseus wants to obtain glory and recognition for his courageous deeds. Though he would often take it too far and become arrogant, confidence is hugely important in leadership. At certain times, however, he would pompously ignore someone’s advice or act how he wanted, regardless of the consequences of his choices. The best example of this is when he intentionally hollered back to the Cyclops who he was as he was leaving.
