Why Is Beowulf Be Considered A Hero
Since the days of Beowulf, heroic characteristics have changed slightly. However, some qualities have stood the test of time. It is still considered heroic to sacrifice oneself for the betterment of others, while prowess in battle is no longer considered heroic. Another quality no longer considered heroic is to have pride in your actions. Lastly, standing up as a leader for others is still considered heroic. Of course, characteristics defining a hero changes from culture to culture. However, the most prominent heroes stem from Western cultures. Humans have always been selfish. Behaviors such as sacrificing oneself for others are desirable, because people want someone to do it for them, should the time come. This desire has not changed, thus it remains a heroic quality to do so. Beowulf sacrificed himself for the citizens that the monsters were terrorizing. He leapt to the opportunity without falter. This makes him a hero in both the past and present. Many mourned him for a long time, as they would today. In the past, great warriors were considered heroes. They exemplified the idea that they could protect others. However, with today’s societies’ negative outlook on violence, combat expertise is no longer as desirable or honorable as it used to be. The idea that someone will stand up and take care of others has always been wanted. It stems from selfish desire as well, like most things humans want. For these actions, he was considered a hero. Leaders today are those who take action when no one else does. They are the ones who run to someone’s aid, while everyone else is frozen in fear or shock. Leaders are those who are willing to take responsibility, something many will not do. Leaders do not complain about their

Unlike in Beowulf, they are generally low-key doctors who work to find the panacea for the world's ills, the politicians struggling for the rights of their people, the mothers who do anything to make the lives of their children better. All heroes have significant qualities. Many have the impression that heroes are people who have done something that is "cool" or singles them out. There are countless definitions of heroes, but most people's ideas about the characteristics of a hero are fairly consistent. It is important that a hero's cause is for the "good". A hero must be courageous and intrepid, meeting obstacles without fear. They have to be willing to fight with perseverance for their cause with determination and dedication. Another especially important quality is selflessness, to do it with unselfish concern for others, not for profit. Heroes must have conviction and focus in their purpose. Many accept that the willingness to sacrifice is perhaps the most important quality of a hero, the forfeiture of something highly valued for a cause. Once these guidelines are taken into consideration, many "heroes" are excluded, such as sporting greats, politicians and war…

Both hold the basic principles of being significantly glorified, holding a high moral standing, and possessing integrity, strength, and responsibility when leading others. Being courageous means to stand up to adversity without fear, to continue to forge on regardless of the daunting things one faces. Beowulf was not shy about showing his courage. Would Beowulf still be considered a hero today? Many would say no, but I would disagree because Beowulf has many attributes that American Soldiers have as well. They do things that people don’t even dream about it since it will put their own lives at risk. Foster explains how in order to keep the plot flowing people must die instead of the hero. “The plot needs something to happen in order to move forward, so someone must be sacrificed. That ‘someone’ is rarely the protagonist” (Foster 84). This quote shows how someone must be sacrificed in order to continue the plot. In Beowulf there is a good example of this. When Aeschere is killed Beowulf says, “Tis better for a man to avenge his friends death than to spend his days lamenting.” This quote leads to Beowulf’s next quest, which is to kill Grendel’s mother. Without the death of Aeschere the plot would be stuck with no flow to Beowulf’s next quest. This shows how Beowulf can be classified as a hero in literature. Lastly, Beowulf is a hero because he was never afraid to die for the purpose of his quest, multiple times he said he was either to die or achieve his…

First of these Characteristics is Honor. Honor is showing a sense of honesty fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions. Beowulf showed honor, when he went to the land of the Danes to kill Grendel. He did not only do it for money, but because he wanted to help out the Geats. Beowulf felt as if it was the right thing to do since he had been successful in past deeds which he proudly says in lines 321-322, where he says “They had in remembrance my courage and might. Many had seen me come safe from the conflict; Beowulf expected no reward for his action, but rather just being able to put another notch in his belt.” (Anglo- Saxon Hero) Another heroic characteristic that Beowulf possesses is bravery. Bravery is by having the courage to do something and being able to go against the odds and possibly risk your life in the process. Beowulf showed bravery when he goes to slay the dragon even though all his men abandon him. But as he goes to slay the dragon, he soon realizes that the dragon is mightier than he is, but he still has the courage to…
