Late nineteenth century and early twentieth century America experienced a giant scale of immigration. By those days, America was known for receiving the waves of immigrants who were not from English speaking countries (excluding the Irish). Because of their language and their background, it was really hard for them to adjust in the society and call themselves Americans, especially during twentieth century culture. In order to become full citizens and avoid constant discrimination and marginalization, immigrants started to enlist themselves into the U.S army. Some fought because they wanted to do something for the country while some became soldiers because they were told so.…

has made me look at American people through the lens of an outsider. Although I moved here when I was young, and I am currently a U.S. citizen, I still fail to understand some aspects of the logic of the American people. I have merged my Bosnian culture with bits and pieces of American culture to become who I am today, however, my culture predominantly focuses on my Bosnian heritage. In all the years that I have lived here, I have discovered that Americans believe they are supreme. You may ask, “Why do they believe this?” It is because it is what they have been told and what they have come to believe after hearing it so many times. Americans are very focused on themselves. We have the best economy, the richest people, the nicest houses, the best cars, the smartest people, and the most advanced technology, so why shouldn’t we be labeled as “the best.” If everyone acted like Americans, then perhaps the world would be a better place. However, it appears that this is not the case. Horace Miner’s article and Laura Bohannan’s story proves us all wrong. We are not the best and we are not as logical as we think we…

Tim O’Brien and Harriet Beecher Stowe would agree that there is not much difference between a soldier and a slave. Drafted soldiers fighting in foreign countries in the interests of unknown authorities are the same as slaves toiling in fields for their master’s profits. Of course, there are some soldiers who join out of their own free will, just as there are slaves that choose to stay because they have nowhere else to go. However, for those that don't want to be institutionalized, slaves can escape just as soldiers have the ability to desert - neither option being very pleasant. Pleasantries are not common in either occupation, both consist of “blood and cruelty” that no one has the “nerve to hear” (Stowe) and these tragedies can not be simply…

The well-known Star Spangled Banner elaborates on the land of the free, and the home of the brave - but why does this free land exist, and who are the brave? The United States Armed Forces are the federal military forces of the United States. They consist of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. This coalition was founded on June 14, 1755 and the current Minister of Defense is Ash Carter. There are also three general categories of military people; active duty, who are full-time soldiers and sailors, reserve & guard forces, who are individuals who work a civilian job but can be called to full-time military duty, and veterans and retirees, who are the past members of the military. Then there are also the millions of family…

I don't believe that America was truly free in this time. The " Separate but free" made it clear it wasn't. People were being told where to sit and where they couldn't sit because of the color of their skin. If America would have been truly free, laws like those wouldn't exist and people would be able to go about their day without the fear of being arrested because they sat in the wrong seat in the train. There was also no freedom towards colored people because every time they tried to use their rights, it was always twisted to make it seem like they were treated fairly even when they…

America today is more disillusioned than back in the 1920’s. I believe that America today is more unhappy because of divorce rates, technology, and people being materialistic. Today in America everyone gets divorced now. I also believe that technology today drives people to become more distant from their family and friends. People being materialistic today in America has caused relationship problems. That is why I believe that America today is more disillusioned and unhappy than America in the 1920’s.…

I agree having the opportunity to be anything you want with hard work and dedication is what makes America great. You mentioned how advertising plays a huge part in our decisions and that true we are easily led to buying the next big thing. It is so easy to get sucked into the latest fad because everyone is doing it or everyone has it. For example, the whole Pokemon game I could believe how people were walking around chasing an imaginary thing. This blew my mind.…

Everybody perceives situations differently, but that is how people make more informed future decisions. When it comes to analyzing countries, there are many factors to consider. America is perceived by other countries as a country where human rights are valued, but there is still a lot of Anti-Americanism in the world. Citizens of other countries hold onto this Anti-Americanism which stems from the attitudes of the foreign policy makers in America, however the citizens of America view themselves to live in an educated, diverse country.…
