Why Is Algebra Important
Algebra is one of the most important subjects someone can learn. It is a subject that transfers into daily life, often without anyone even realizing it. Unlike English or History classes, Algebra can be put straight to use once learned. It is one of the most versatile subjects there is. Algebra can be anything from calculating the amount of money you've spent on your grocery shopping, keeping track of the calories you have in your diet, and designing structural plans for a building.

Going shopping and frequenting stores can often get out of hand and confusing as to how much things cost or to how much you saved on an item. Algebra can help you to configure all of these things and also save you from making any costly mistakes. Many items in grocery stores are often on sale at some point or another whether it be 10% percent to 50% and a lot of times people don't know how much they are saving on any particular item. Algebra simply allows a person to calculate all of these things. …show more content…
Counting the number of carbohydrates or calories and keeping track of them can get overwhelming at times and a person can get confused. Algebra can help you to see how many calories you have had and also it can help you calculate how many you are able to have in the future. Cooking is also another skill that is associated with algebra.     Understanding that multiplication and repeated addition are related will help extend the students use of multiplication. They will understand that when grouping items they can use multiplication to achieve the same answer in a shorter amount of time. One method I can use to teach repeat addition and multiplication is manipulatives. For example, I can use a projector to display a picture of a box and two small toy kittens. I will start out with one box with one group of kittens. I will progress to display two groups with two toy kittens each. This will continue for however far I see fit. I will model how multiplication is a form of repeated addition. I will write the written form of addition and multiplication next to each problem. By the group of two toy kittens I will write out 1+1=2 and 2*1=2 on the white board display. For the group of two boxes with two kittens in each group I will write 2+2=4 and 2*2=4 on the white board display. Understanding the basic principles and properties for addition and multiplication is key for later skills with algebraic equations. By understanding the properties of multiplication, this will help them figure out grouped items as well as word problems. The understanding of this concept also helps with the understanding in comparison problems. Area calculation is another extent that understanding multiplication and addition will help in mathematics.…

    In “Is Algebra Necessary?” by Andrew Hacker, an emeritus professor of political science at Queens College, City University of New York , Hacker critiques algebra, claiming that students are not passing, and that this is limiting the level of education available to them . Hacker suggests that if we make math more practical, by adding things such as “citizen statistics,” more students will succeed. In the beginning of his essay Hacker provides evidence many American students, from high school to college, are expected to fail their algebra classes. The author then makes the point that pressing students to take, and pass, math courses prevents some from discovering their own talents. Hacker suggests that algebra can cause students of all backgrounds to struggle, even when talented in other areas of academics. Hacker clarifies that the negative effects of math requirements occur in both high school and college level students, he makes this point by claiming that many universities expect a certain number of high school math courses for entrance, and require students to take math once in attendance. Hacker then argues that passing math alone is not good enough, claiming that many colleges look for high math SAT scores that are only achieved by a very small percentage of the population, making it difficult to be accepted into colleges. He then mentions that math in the classroom does not always apply to real world jobs, where much training is done specifically for the job after hiring. He then admits that people need basic math skills, but most workers will not need algebra or above.     Mathematics has always been a subject that I enjoy. For me, it is simple. Numbers just seem to make sense to me.
