The Peace Corps
The Peace Corps is an agency that has been helping people around the world for years. They send volunteers to help countries in need of services. The Peace Corps offers many opportunities for American citizens to take. Many volunteers come back satisfied from their trip. The history, the process of getting in, being accepted, and life before and after the Peace Corps is a challenge and experience that many American volunteers can have.
In 1960, October 14, John F. Kennedy came to the University of Michigan and introduced the campaign of the Peace Corps. He stood in front of 5,000 students encouraging them to contribute two years of their lives to their country helping others

There is a lot to prepare for. It is recommended to research the country you will be moving to in order to prepare for what you need to bring. Volunteers are only allowed to bring 80 pounds of luggage, unless you are going to a colder climate then it is 102 pounds. It can be overwhelming to pack this little for two years, but volunteers can send items too. The key to packing for the Peace Corps is to pack light and save room for souvenirs. The country that you will be going to will have essentials that you can buy. It is also recommended that you bring your favorite books, games, pictures, and items that remind you of home. Some necessities are basic clothes, money, a water purifier, a sleeping bag, and other things you would bring on a camping trip. The Peace Corps advises you to not bring any electronics such as laptops, tablets, and cellphones. It all depends on your living …show more content…
Before volunteers settle in to their new homes, they go through training. New volunteers live with host families for three months while they go through the program. Training applies to all of the job categories such as agriculture, community economic development, education, environment, health, and youth in development. It is an experience where volunteers make friends, learn about a different culture, and learn skills that they will need for the two years to come. For many volunteers the lifestyle varies. If you are working the businesses side of the Peace Corps than you will most likely be in a more established region with running water and electricity compared to some one working in health care for sick people with Ebola in a poor village. Volunteers find their life simple and fun. They get to know their fellow neighbors and adjust to the new culture. Some volunteers live with other volunteers and some live independently. The Peace Corps pays its volunteers monthly or quarterly. The range of payment is usually between 200 to 300 dollars. It is your choice how you spend your money. A fraction of it goes for food and other essentials such as soap or towels. The rest of the money can go towards souvenirs, a pet, or someone coming once a week to clean your house. Depending on your program, the days and hours you work can differ. Each volunteer is given 48 days of vacation throughout

The second organization that I had the opportunity to volunteer for is Goodwill Rescue mission. They created this organization in 1896. Under the leadership of Rev. Lawrence Sutherland, the purpose of the organization moved from being a struggling institution to one with a nationwide reputation. They shared the love of God in Christ by providing food, shelter, spiritual guidance and instruction for the poor and the homeless in Newark. According to Goodwill Rescue mission, they affiliate with helping the individuals directly rather than send them someplace else to fend for themselves. The program is also working with some of these individuals to get them back on their feet to fend for themselves. They have to go through programs if any of them…

John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s significance was that he won presidency after narrowly beating Richard Nixon in the 1960 presidential election. The debates between Nixon and Kennedy were the first to be televised and many tilted toward Kennedy because he looked younger and healthier than Nixon did, which introduced the idea that public image was highly influential in the way Americans voted. Among John F. Kennedy 's most notable and long-standing accomplishments was the establishment of the Peace Corps, an organization that is now responsible for sending thousands of American volunteers around the world to help the needy. JFK’s cautious and sensible approach to the standoff during the Cuban Missile Crisis diverted a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Kennedy promised freedom to the world but was very cautious when it came to ensuring equal rights in the United States. Kennedy’s leadership in the civil rights area was hesitant at best, but he laid out the floor plans…

You will also need to place a small amount of cash in the kit. The kit should be small enough to grab in case you need to be evacuated. You should always take the kit with you even if you think you will be gone for only a short time. One of his priorities was to resolve clashes between foreign lands, he wanted to resolve the issues of war and bring peace. In March 1961, Kennedy established the Peace Corps, a volunteer program that sends young Americans to countries abroad in an attempt to promote world peace and friendship. This was Kennedy's first great achievement as president. The program included development in education, healthcare, agriculture, and construction. The Peace Corps encouraged the service and the optimism of the younger generation. By the end of the century, over 170,000 Peace Corps volunteers would serve in 135 countries. However, Kennedy still wished to fulfill his mission of being the first nation devoted to the revolution of human rights. The United States relation with Latin America had been weakening progressively in the years prior to Kennedy entering the White House. President Kennedy was determined to advance relations with Latin America through peaceful economic assistance and development. Thus in 1961, he created the Alliance for Progress to stimulate greater economic ties with Latin America, in hopes of diminishing poverty and preventing the spread of communism in the country. The United States vowed $20 billion in assistance that would promote democracy and undertake significant social developments in Latin America. It was the biggest U.S. aid program…

Volunteers are a necessity for nonprofits and need to be recruited. There are many reasons for recruiting volunteers. One reason is “to give your organization the power to do more work”; there is nothing as powerful as a large body of willing helpers to make a mission statement a reality (Nagy). While working with AmeriCorps- City Year, I was in charge of the Martin Luther King Day of Service in New Orleans and without the almost 200 people that showed up, the service projects would not be completed. That event won the MLK Service Award for all City Year…

Gigi Starr of USA Today states, “Going to a foreign country for a volunteer experience is a huge boost on a resume. Employers love to see a person that can think outside the box and work past their comfort zone. The added benefits of teamwork, foreign language knowledge, and plain old hard work also add polish to the volunteer candidate. Since business now happens on a global scale, the volunteer is armed with useful, and potentially actionable, information”.…
