Why Homophobia Is A Form Of Discrimination
America has been a progressive country during the past few years for the LGBT+ community. From same sex marriage being legal since June 26,2015(Vogue and Diamond,2015) along with schools and stores being told to allow transgender students/customers to use the bathroom that correlates with the gender they identify with(Kosar, 2016). Also, the first ever LGBT+ monument was established(Hetter and Liptak,2016). Although there have been many advancements in the acceptance for the community, one place refuses to move forward. This place is known as the Westboro Baptist Church.This church constantly tells people to hate members of the LGBT+ community and protests their beliefs on why homosexualtiy is wrong. In this essay, I hope to show why this church is not only exercising their freedom of speech,but is actually discriminating a community of diverse people.

After battling with depression and the hate from her family, she killed herself on December 28, 2014 and posted her suicide note on Tumblr for all to see. In the note she tells how she felt like a girl trapped in a boy’s body since age four and that when she came out ten years later to her mother that she had a very negative reaction(Alcorn,2014). After being forced to a conversion camp, she killed herself because she felt her life wasn’t worth living. This is just one of the many stories of transgender youth who kill themselves because of hate from family and others. It is devastating that people would rather die or hide who they are than to come forward about who they truly. It can also be a great weight on the family because they must live the fact that caused their own loved one to end their life because of their
