Why High School Students Attend College

Kirst (2003), expressed that students aspires to attend college but their desire is being undermined by the disconnection between what post-secondary expects from students and what high school students prepare for. This factors leads them to being economically disadvantaged which is not a good thing. He relates that students in the study are so poorly prepared for their college experience that they ended up taking remedial courses that causes a huge psychological barrier between those freshmen and graduating students who survived their term at college. He also quoted “Many can’t handle the work or get discouraged and end up dropping out” he believes that there are students who do not receive any adequate information from what they should do and expect to do in college.
They receive more time for counseling and presented with more opportunities to visit college campuses. Hence, the at-risk students and their parents who lacks experience and knowledge about college often left without this information. He also suggested that the one answer that can solve the at-risk student issue is to have a better communication and coordination between the governing board in high school and financial aid assistance that reward students for completing college
