Why Does This Childish Phrase Matter

¨But why?¨ is a phrase that I have come to use too many times to count whether it was questioning my mother's orders or questioning my textbooks. Itś a phrase that is simultaneously useless when it comes to my mother and very important when it comes to my textbooks. Why does this childish phrase matter?, well it lead me to a much more pertinent phrase that changed my life. The first time I heard this excerpt it was on a Sunday like any other unassuming and quiet but the words echoed in my mind louder than anything
“Grandpa can I borrow this”
“I don't know that's a little complicated for someone your age”
“But why”
“Because you won't understand it”
“Won't you at least let me try”
“Just Promise to bring it back”
And I heard the words of the sermon resonate clearer than ever before ¨2 Timothy 2:22-2:25 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Superficial problems and goals that sounded good when I told them to people, things like that I wanted to travel or telling them that I did not care what I was going to do as long as the money was good. But that changed when I read this phrase it was profound and made me realize that for better or for worse take a look at myself see the direction I was heading what I was planning to do and ask would this make me happy would this give me meaning would it make me apart of something bigger than myself and my own personal desires? Would this gratification in the short term make me happy in the long? Are these goals I set for myself and be enough to make me want to wake up in the morning day after
