Why Do Students Have Dress Codes

Most students struggle with the same struggle day after day: The dress code. This topic in particular has proved to be very controversial within teachers and students. Some say it shouldn't be enforced and is just used to control students. Others say that it's for the greater good and that students who don't abide by it should be punished. Today you will learn the truth. Because dress codes are restrictive, often biased, and unnecessary, they should not be enforced in public schools. In an article, author, Olivia Laramie wrote “Students spend approximately seven hours a day, five days a week in the school setting. Where do they go after that? Out into society… In society, there is not a dress code. However, are they not still learning while being exposed to “risque” clothing choices?” Education does not stop when students leave the walls of the school nor does it stop when they see a variety of different clothing choices. If a student is distracted by another student’s clothing choices, then that should be up to them to decide what to do, but the other student should not be oppressed just to fit in to their likings. Authority figures shouldn't punish and limit other students because a handful of people don't know how to behave themselves. Instead they should be teachings those students that are misbehaving to control themselves and grow up. When students get older and are forced to deal with real world situations. In those situations, they will see that the world doesn't just change to fit their ideals and that they have to adjust.
