Why Do Some Liquids Diffuse In The Same Way
Question:
Do all liquids diffuse in the same way? Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment was to find out if all liquids diffuse in the same way.

Hypothesis:
If different liquids diffuse, then the process will not be the same because liquids are made up of different molecules, with different densities, the diffusion will take longer/shorter than others.

Materials:
1 plastic dropper with rubber top (medicine dropper)
3 glass beakers (400mL)
1 graduated cylinder (500mL)
4 drops of red food coloring
4 drops of vegetable cooking oil
300 mL of water times 2
1 teabag of orange pekoe
Electric kettle (to boil water)
300 mL of boiling water

Variables:
Independent Variable; the liquids poured into the water (teabag, oil, food coloring)

As we dropped the first drop of oil into the water, it formed a small circle and sat on the surface, as it slowly drifted at the top the water. The second drop did so as well, but the two drops seemed to be attracted to each other, almost how a magnets would. With the third drop, the second and third drops quickly morphed together to form a larger circle. Right after, the first drop joined together (this reminded me of how smaller molecules and particles might enter through the cell membrane). Then, the fourth and fifth drop joined, and the two circles then merged to form the largest circle of oil. The new drop of oil sat atop the middle of the water but moved ever so …show more content…
However, like every scenario, there is always something that goes wrong or something that you would be willing to change to make the experiment more outstanding. In this case, the first thing I would have done differently would be the filming angle. For the food coloring experiment, we did not film what was going on from the top of the beaker; instead, we filmed in from the side angle only. However, we did use both points of views for the other two experiments which proved to be quite useful.

Furthermore, we filmed the food coloring experiment from the side view, but from the wrong angle. Consequently, it is harder to see what is going on inside the beaker because the measurements on the side are somewhat in the way. Lastly, we learned that we should've put a white sheet of paper behind the beaker while filming so the light doesn’t mess around with the water and so there wouldn't be refraction of light. Unfortunately, we learned to do that after we filmed the food coloring.

To complete this lab, I first mixed the solvent solution consisting of the proper ratio of water, salt, and isopropyl alcohol in a Pyrex measuring cup. I then prepared my chromatography papers for 2 trials by drawing, with a pencil, the appropriate lines and labels. Using a toothpick, I added the color to the paper, and then repeated until the color was strong. I repeated this step several more times for the M&Ms as the color solution was not as strong as the food dyes. After the dyes were dry, I rolled the paper and added it to the pie plate, which contained a small amount of the prepared solvent. I then waited for the solution to…

The reason for this is because of density and how dense the cold water really is. That’s why when you put the cold water on top the molecules would want to sink towards the bottom of the jar which is basically the conclusion of Trial 2.…

The experiment performed in the first part of this lab was to mix various chemical solutions together and then observe and record the chemical changes, also if a chemical change occurred at all. This was very interesting to me since some of the chemicals I thought were going to react didn’t, while some I thought were going to have no change suddenly changed color or texture.…

This experiment was successful overall, given a few errors. This experiment was done twice due to the paper having pen ink marks which interfered with the movement of the substances in the first experiment. During the second trial, it was a little difficult to measure the distance the substances traveled because multiple drops of each were dropped right above each other rather than on top of each other. By the end of the experiment, the distance traveled by each substance and the color changes of each substance was still clear and was able to be measured and recorded.…

The purpose of this experiment is to compare the different densities of different liquids. Density is a comparison between an object's mass and volume. Density = Mass divided by Volume. If the weight (or mass) of something increases but the volume stays the same, the density has to go up. If the mass decreases but the volume stays the same, the density has to go down. This experiment will show how the weight of certain liquids react to each other.…

To test diffusion in a liquid, take two flasks and set them at different temperatures. To accomplish the temperature difference, one flask can be placed on ice and one should be left at room temperature. The flask should be placed on ice for about fifteen minutes until the water temperature is equal to the ice bath temperature. To indicate the rate of diffusion one milliliter of dye solution can be placed in each flask. Over period of one hour the colder flask will result in slower diffusion that the flask at room temperate. This experiment accurately supports that at higher temperatures molecules will diffuse faster. Diffusion in a gas can be tested by spraying a scent. However long it takes a person to smell the scent is the diffusion rate. Diffusion rate is measured in meters per second. A factor that may affect diffusion in a gas is a vent causing turbulence which may affect the rate at which the molecules…

As soon as the flask was turned upside down and had the pipet and the medicine dropper attached to it, we gave the medicine dropper a squeeze. The water from the beaker started to rise up the Mohr pipet. This was due to the lacking pressure that was in the flask. As the water rose higher and higher the first drop came out of the pipet and into the flask. As each drop proceeded to come out, the process sped up faster and faster to where it started to make a fountain inside the flask. As the process sped up the color started changing as well. Our color turned from no color…
