Why Do Rebel Groups Seize Power In An Undemocratic Way?
Since a couple of years there has been a significant increase in rebel groups trying to seize power in an undemocratic way. There are several main groups which we have all heard about, such as Al Qaida and Islamic State (ISIS). These groups are targeting journalists for various reasons. According to Samantha Power, who was a journalist before she became an U.S. ambassador, states that: “Power said regimes and armed groups target journalists because they do not want people to see them for what they really are." The main reason for this, is because these groups rely on the support of individuals in the country they are based in, as well as other countries around the world. Therefore when journalists are reporting on war-inflicted areas and the people involved, rebel groups may fear the loss of support from their followers and thus decides to eliminate such issue by abusing the journalists, ensuring that the information are not broadcasted. …show more content…
One of the recent examples would be the execution of American journalists by ISIS in 2014, in which the executioner sent a message through video to the United States of America with the demand for US to stop the air strikes in Iraq. These events are extremely effective in causing paranoia and fear amongst the world as they are released onto the internet, in which everything spreads very quickly. However, these attacks on journalists are not only targeted by rebel groups in the world, but also by individuals. For example, in Brazil, one of the most dangerous countries to work in as a journalist, we see that journalists covering drug related stories are also being attacked and kidnapped by drug cartels. This was done mainly to intimidate the journalists and press to keep them from reporting on drug flows in the

A lot of news reporters will do whatever is needed for them to get a paycheck, including spreading fake news or exaggerating small news. Imagine if the United States did order an execution on Bergdahl. The country could be viewed as an antagonist for killing one of its very own sergeants. Just like a volcano, the news, internet, and social media would erupt as soon as the order is sent. That is one of the last things that we need! The U.S. is under enough fire as it is already and being put under a rain of complaints, protests, and insults would only make it worse! Ordering an execution would not be helping the United…

In today's modern war, media censorship is strong. Learning that if the public was allowed to see the horrors of a war that wasnt making obvious progress would cause support for the war to wane, the government at one point only allowed 16 civilian journalists for the 500,000 American ground troops serving in Operation Desert Storm. Even then, the military barred their access to the front line and moved…

Faith in the magnitude of a press free of governmental control has stayed stable right through American history. America’s Founding Fathers affirmed the fundamental right of citizens to be informed about all sides of an issue without governmental interference. Thomas Jefferson even went so far as to write: “If it were left to me to decide whether we should have a government without a free press or a free press without a government, I would prefer the latter.” (The First Amendment to the United States Constitution, 2009). It is the reason why, among other things, the United States has no ministry of information to regulate the activities of journalists, no requirement that journalists be registered; and no requirement that they be members of a union. The First Amendment states,…

The media can have a drastically negative effect on terrorism by actually promoting the terrorist’s cause. One such example of the media coverage actually propagating the terrorist’s message would be the horrendous September 11, 2001 attacks of the hijacked planes into the Twin Towers in New York City. There isn’t an American citizen in the world who doesn’t know of the painstaking terror that swept through the country as we witnessed the scene via the myriad of media coverage on every channel.…

There are numerous examples to back my opinion. In august of 2014 the Islamic extremist group known as Isis seized thousands of properties from Christian residents. This should be a big deal but major news outlets such as ABC CBS and NBC didn’t provide its viewers with any information on this topic. In November of 2014 reporter Melissa Francis was effectively silenced by CNBC for criticizing Obamacare. She had stated that there were mathematical errors, rather than political problems, present that wouldn’t allow people to keep their own healthcare. This statement proved to be true as many Americans found there healthcare canceled. She was told that her statement was disrespecting the President. Again the news showed its bias by dedicating half an hour to the deflate gate scandal of the future super bowl winning New England Patriots while only a minute of the show to report that President Obama had released five major terrorists from Guantanamo Bay and placed them back into areas with extremist violence. This would seem is an effort to defer the public’s attention from a serious mistake by the President and bring more attention to something trivial like a few PSI missing from…

“‘Our journalists in Iraq have been shoved on the ground, pushed out of the way, told to leave the scene of explosions; we've had camera disks and videotapes confiscated, reporters detained,’ says Sandy Johnson, Washington Bureau chief for the Associated Press” (Keefe). The censorship for the war in Iraq remained like it had in the past. When a reported 4,000 American soldier deaths came into light, there were only a handful of pictures found (Spencer). Past attempts by the media to report on war have yielded to a fearful outcome. It is understandable as to why the press was not focused primarily on the Iraq War, but the public deserves to know what is happening in connection to their…

Then there’s Russia, where the state controls all major newspapers and national TV networks, which are still the major news source for the bulk of the population. Journalists are beaten up or murdered, and the perpetrators, conveniently, are never found. Political dissenters are cowed, arrested, or driven into exile.…

An example of such an act can be found in an article titled “Where Are Media When The Jihadist Torture and Murder Americans” by Oliver North. On March 1984, the CIA station Chief, William Buckley, was abducted and taken to a Beirut dungeon. There he was tortured and murdered, then photographs and recordings of his beatings were sent back to the CIA director. The media concluded that his treatment was the consequences of working for the CIA (Head 82). The first thing that comes to mind is why would the media brush an event as severe as this under the rug? However, the media has leaked information to the public that wasn't entirely true. For example, an “FBI agent saw the guards bring a growling dog into the interrogation room, which he assumed was being used to intimidate Qahtani- although subsequent investigation showed that dogs at Gitmo were used to escort prisoners back and forth to their cells, not to threaten them. Since that detail was included in the FBI e-mails, and later leaked, the idea that dogs were used to abuse prisoners would become a fixture in the false portrait that was being painted of the goings-on at Gitmo.” (Herman). This is a wonderful Example of how the media has taken information and turned it inside out to create a more compelling story. Another example of this is an interview of Muhammad al-Qahtani, Muhammad told reporters that he had been sitting in his cell when soldiers entered his room and beat him before emptying two canisters of tear gas on him and then after all that they beat him again. Of course, it was all a lie, just another piece of the Gitmo myth that was constructed to ruin the Bush Administration (Herman). What Herman means is the media has been piecing together falsified facts and has created a myth about the happenings in Guantanamo…

(Friedman, “Ideological Roots of Media Bias”) In March 2001, Marwan Barghouti, a Palestinian Authority leader, warned that any Israeli journalist who entered Palestinian Authority areas would be killed. (Palestinefacts.org) Since then, most Israeli journalists either do not go to Palestinian Authority areas, or if they do, they make sure to be accompanied by well-connected Palestinians. Terrorism is a frequent cause of many senseless killings and mass murders that take place all around the globe. The practice of terrorism has increased exponentially over the past twenty years and is now becoming a major world problem. Terrorists strive for money and they will do virtually anything to get their hands on it. The most popular way of doing this is by taking citizens captive and demanding the families or government to pay a large sum of money for their safe return home. If the government refuses to pay or the ransom is not paid in the given amount of time, the terrorists record the brutal execution of the captives, usually beheadings, and sometimes stream it online for everyone to see. These hostage situations cause a tremendous…

News media refers to television, radio, and print journalism. It also refers to newer sources on the internet, including news, reporting services, the blogosphere, website pages, and propaganda broadcasts (White 104). Terrorism requires interdisciplinary research techniques because it involves so many aspects of the human experience, and its relationship with media have not been fully explored (White 104). Jeff Ian Ross, according to our text book, first off, believes meanings are socially created and Ross demonstrates that reporting is a part of the social construction of terrorism. Second, terrorists are aware of the power of the media and seek to manipulate their message through it. Third, while the media enhances the power of terrorism, it does not cause it. Finally, terrorists will…

It seemed the media was being manipulated by terrorists to implement fear into citizens. As time went on the producers and reporters started editing the stories taking back control. In the early twenty-first century terrorist found to multiple sources of media to promote a point. These media sources include Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. To recruit individuals terrorists try to inform citizens of their beliefs. If they happen to believe the same things as terrorists they join. Another target for terrorists is attracting individuals who have hate or that are alone. People that are alone are wanting to…
