Thomas Jefferson one of our founding fathers once said that “Laws that forbid the carrying of arms only disarm those who are neither inclined or determined to commit crimes”. Gun control laws have been around since the 1800’s ,with the fist law coming into play in 1870.That first law about firearms stated that you would need a license if you wished to carry your firearms outside of your own home and property. Then in the 1900’s a law passed to help insure the safety of other. That law passed in 1903 and it stated that firearms could not be sold to the drunken or the mentally insane and unstable. Evidence has proven that more gun control laws would not be beneficial to the public and would not help reduce the amount of violent crimes being committed with guns.…
Gun Control: The Battle Rages On With the Second Amendment giving American citizens the rights to bear arms, and approximately fifty percent of Americans owning some form of a firearm, issues involving the ownership and possession of guns have led to heated debates in American society. Most notably is the issue of gun control. Many feel that the some form of gun regulation is necessary in order to lower the level of gun related violence in the country. On the other hand, the opponents of gun control feel that it would be an infringement on their second amendment rights. The outcome and extent of gun control has strong political implications because it basically determines the present day meaning of the Second Amendment. While each side has strong points to their arguments, one quote by writer Michael Warfel basically sums up the need for gun control. He writes, “An individual’s right to own and bear arms must be balanced by the greater social needs of a society” (Warfel, 2000, p. 18). Today, based on the number of crimes and violent acts committed with guns, society needs more gun control.…
Josh Monroe Dr. Price English 112 “No Gun Control, Ever” I do not agree that the U.S. should have gun control laws. The Second Amendment that is in our national Constitution titles that, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” This right has been amended in our Constitution since 1791, and still there have been forms of gun control ever since. The National Rifle Association (NRA) is a supporter of the Second Amendment and also an adversary of those who propose limitations on guns. Over the years there have been many U.S. presidents that were members of the NRA, for example, Raegan, Bush, Nixon, also Eisenhower and Kennedy. One question you may ask is, why do citizens have a necessity to own a handgun? One reason is tradition. For as long as this country has been established, gun owners have been around, for self-defense and to hunt for wild game that will later be food. Buying, possessing, or carrying a gun doesn’t hurt anyone. Up until a person compels a crime, he/she is free to choose what he/she wants to do.…
When it comes down to Law enforcement they are required by law to bear arms not only for our protection but for their protection also from criminal. Certain law makers and organizations feel that we should change this amendment, and make it more difficult to own a firearm. I would disagree, and feel it would have an opposite effect on society. For example, in 1997, Britain placed a ban on owning a gun. Since the inception of the new law, Scotland Yard reports that the number of police injured by gun-wielding criminals has quadrupled. In that same time frame, the number of violent attacks by gun toting criminals has more than doubled. Today, a decade after the gun ban, England has grown so violent that you are more than likely to be assaulted in London, than in New York City, or…
The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution states, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The United States has the highest total and per capita of gun owners in the world which is clearly with inside the United States Constitution. As far back as 1792 a federal law was signed by President…
Background checks would require government databases that keep personal individual information on gun owners, including name, addresses, mental health history, criminal records, and more. More gun control is not needed; education about guns and gun safety is needed to prevent accidental gun deaths. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people and people need more gun education and mental illness screening to prevent massacres. The second Amendment was intended to protect gun ownership of all vigorous men so that they could participate in the militia to keep the peace and defend the country if needed. According to the United States Code, a militia is composed of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age… under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard. Overall, .many people believe that more gun control laws are not necessary due to the fact that it isn't the gun that kills but the person behind the gun who’s most…
Gun Control is a huge issue in the United States. It was declared in our constitution in the 2nd amendment that we have the right to bear arms. Every person is entitled through the second amendment to legally own and use fire arms. There are many issues that have come up with gun control: conceal and carry, semi-automatic weapons, and gang violence. Many people in this beautiful country we call the United States, feel like they need to take away the right to bear arms. To me I believe this is wrong. I believe you should be able to legally own and operate a weapon in a safe and secure manner. Anyone that is a law abiding citizen should be able to own a firearm.…
The conflict of stronger/ tougher gun laws are a great debate. In the United States the argument varies per state and city. Cities such as chicago with a higher gun murder rate are prime examples of why we should have stronger gun laws. The gun laws in america have way too many loopholes. These loopholes leads to many mass shooting with guns being sold/bought by uneducated and mentally unstable. The Daily Beast reported over the last fourth of July, there was over 84 people shot and 14 of them succumb to their gun wounds. This wasn't the only bloody holiday in Chiraq due to gun violence, the past Easter(2015) was litter with gun violence with over 45 people shot and wounded. This is why we must implement stricter background checks. We need…
The right to bear arms has a long history in American tradition. From the time colonists settled the North American soil, Americans have held weapons to protect themselves. Armed citizen-soldiers won America 's freedom from English rule more than two centuries ago. Partly because of this long-standing tradition, attempts to restrict a citizen 's right to own a gun evoke strong emotions. When the Mayflower landed on American continent, the first group of immigrants faced the deserted soil and various beasts, weapons helped them survive. (Sandra M. 2009, p.1)Then, weapons played an important role in open up virgin soil in the west. Americans regard guns as their lives because they believe the guns can against to tyranny. The War of Independence is an example. At that time, American people realized that guns were the last shelter of protecting the rights of people. People have their freedom to overthrow the tyranny, but they could not do it without guns. So the gun ownership is an individual right guaranteed by the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Although the Constitution confirms all the freedom of citizens, they are still afraid if the government goes to the bad. So people rely on the guns. Times have passed and circumstances, the government of the USA stays away from the danger of tyranny, the purpose of gun ownership has changed. People use guns to protect themselves and their family. There used to be an eighty-year-old lady…
Most people regard gun control as a black or white matter with no grey area or room for interpretation. From my personal experience with guns, I have never once felt unsafe near a gun in any way, but unfortunately that is not the case for everyone. Which is why I believe that gun safety and security should be one of our nation’s priorities. That being said, gun laws should be made more strict to not only make people feel safer but also combat America's growing crime rate.…
Modern issues essay Gun control is a controversial issue for a long time around the world, particularly in U.S. because of a lots of mass shooting in school and public places. The second Amendment of the U.S. constitution is one of the shortest in all of the bill of right, it was written by the time period of American’s birth and it is the spirit of self-defense that help the new citizens of U.S. win their own freedom from the British. But now as the gun shooting problem happening every day in America, this gun control problem has gradually become to a hot issue. Compare to other countries like Britain, Canada, Japan, China, the difference between U.S. and those countries is in these countries to get a firearm is a very difficult thing and they have very strict gun laws. Gun is very powerful weapon, it would cause serious hurt, even death, we can use gun to protect ourselves or to murder,It is powerful not only to the human but also to the society. I believe the issue is not how many guns are around us but who owns those guns and how the country enforce the gun laws.…
Gun culture in the United States of America has prevailed ever since the beginning of this country’s history. The Second Amendment, written in 1776, protects an individual’s rights to “bear arms” without punishment. Many problems with this law have arisen since 1776, such as a growing number of suicide, accidental, and mass-shooting related deaths. Because the Constitution is a living document, a change is vital for the safety of American citizens. More gun control laws would lead to less crime, violence, and casualties.…
Gun control laws should not be very strict because law-abiding citizens have a right to protect themselves. Stricter gun control laws would make it more difficult for the segment of the population who would use them to protect their families. History has shown that criminals, on the other hand, will surely never have any problems with access to guns, no matter what the law. Passing stricter gun control laws will give criminals an even bigger advantage.…
The second amendment of the United States constitution states that we as American’s have the right to bear arms; however certain gun control laws must be put into place in order to keep the public safe and protect the well being of our country.…
Policy Proposal Paper Deadly Consequence of Gun Control Gun control has been on the forefronts of debate since the 1960’s when there were some high profile shootings. The increase of gun violence since the 1980’s has just increased the argument over who should be allowed to own and carry weapons. The Second Amendment is the biggest stumbling block in this debate because people interpreted it differently. The one side argues that it states that we have the right to bear arms, but the other side says that it doesn’t pertain to us anymore in the modern era. Politicians love to use the idea that removing legal guns will drastically reduce suicides, assassinations, gang-violence, school shootings, accidental child deaths, and general murders. They don’t consider the fact that someone that wants to kill themselves will do it anyway they can, or a college kid trying to tear up his school will just blow it up if he cannot find a gun. Criminals vary rarely use registered guns to commit crimes, they use illegally acquired weapons. Gun control only protects the criminals and the image of the government’s control over the people. The controversial movement to disarm people has infringed their natural right to self-preservation(self-defense), which takes away their true freedom. The Founding Fathers believed that freedom and no gun control goes hand in hand, which is why they wrote the Second Amendment. “To disarm the people… was the best and most effectual way to enslave them” (Henry, 1788) Patrick Henry’s quote sums up gun control. So, why after all these years have we forgotten his words? History has proven Henry’s words to be true over and over, but the nation keeps disregarding it. Americans need to act urgently on this matter, because if no action is taken on gun control, we will become another ‘Hitler’s’ Germany or ‘Stalin’s’ Russia, without…
