Why Do Black Lives Matter Essay
Black Lives Matter "Black Lives Matter" is a movement that was created due to the death of black people being shot by the police. A lot of individuals misinterpret this statement, and they respond by saying "All Lives Matter". Of course I believe that all lives matter but this statement is letting everyone know that black people is just as important as any other race. Why are black males being judged by the color of their skin and not by the content of their character. Why are black males being shot when they are unarmed? Why are mothers losing their innocent sons who had a purpose for their life but wont be able to fulfill it because their life was taken by a cop? Why are black males considered a "thug" if they have dread, and tattoos? Why do police think it is acceptable to take a black individuals life? Do they consider that they are someone's father, brother, uncle, or son? I do not think so. When individuals say "Black Lives Matter", they only want others to know that they are important/ Black individuals do not deserve to be shot when they are getting pulled over for a ticket, selling cd's, eating skittles, or walking home. When I heard about these murders on the news I immediately felt saddened for the victim, their family, and the black community. The victims that died were absolutely innocent and did not deserve to die because they were judged. I think it’s Trayvon Martin did not deserve to die because he was walking down the street with a hood on, and eating skittles. What right does a police have to harass him because he was wearing a hood? Trayvon Martin was killed in 2012, and Michael Brown was killed in 2014, that when the movement “Black Lives Matter” began.     The New York Times wrote an article on the case and stated “Mr. Brown’s Body had been in the street for more than two hours.” (NY Times) Tom was burned alive and killed in the middle of street just as Mike Brown was killed in the middle of the street. The mob that killed Tom can be classified as the police officers that get away with murdering unarmed black children. “A disproportionate amount of African-Americans were targeted for traffic stops and other low-level violations; the police relied too heavily on the use of force (almost 90 percent of ‘unnecessary force).’” (Chaney & Davis) This leads me to ask why do police feel the need to use excessive force with African-Americans? Is it the same reason that the mob decided to use fire instead of a fistfight with Tom? Does being black in America give non-people of color a reason to believe African-Americans are genetically criminals? As we examine the facts, we remember that Tom was the victim that was harassed and then used self-defense that escaladed in the death of Bob Stone. This is similar to the story of Trayvon Martin. Trayvon was harassed by George Zimmerman, then preceded to protect himself by using self-defense, however Trayvon did not succeed in protecting himself against Zimmerman and his gun.
