up at Cape Cod in November. Before they landed, they created the first governing document written in America known as the Mayflower Compact which was signed by the male passengers. The women and children remained on the ship while a group of men left to find a place to settle and build a town. They crossed the bay and landed on a beach which they named New Plymouth on December 16, 1620. Due to the cold climate of the area and the fact that they landed in the winter, the first months were extremely difficult for the pilgrims. The harsh cold and wet conditions caused many of them to fall ill due to Scurvy and pneumonia. By the time February came around and the Mayflower was ready to be sent home, only 52 out of the 102 who came survived. The Pilgrims continued to rely on their faith in God however, had it not been for the help of the natives, the Pilgrims would not have survived that first year in the New World.
