Two months foregoing the battle, General Lee had an impressive defeat against the Army of the Potomac at Chancellorsville, Virginia. He then started planning for a Northern invasion by first taking action on the Yankees. His army was at the time 80,000 soldiers! With the army of the Potomac Commander Joseph Hooker and leading about 10,000 soldiers he began moving towards General Lee by Washington D.C. Abraham Lincoln got frustrated by the actions of Commander Joseph Hooker and was replaced by George G. Meade. He then took command of the Army of the Potomac as Robert E. Lee took his army to Pennsylvania. On July first the Army of the Potomac arrived in Pennsylvania and came in
Advanced units then heard about how the army’s came in contact with one another. Conflict then started to rise and so did the battle. By the end of the battle the Federal troops regrouped at the edge of Gettysburg. Meade’s army formed a three mile long line from Culp’s Hill and Cemetery Ridge to the base of Little Round Top. The Confederates led a six mile of around the Union’s location. General Robert E. Lee continued to pummel the Union. The Confederacy suffered a defeat from the Union. Abraham Lincoln called the Battle of Gettysburg “a new birth of freedom.” Lincoln was not very happy with the Confederacy and was furious with General Meade.
