Why Did Jamestown Die In Jamestown?
One of the biggest reason why Jamestown really sufferd was when john smith had to go back to england and they had no good substainable water source nor did they have any idea of how to farm with this new land. John smith got injured in a gunpowder explosion and had to go back to england. Also most of their water supply was not good and would give them diseases like disentary. When they came over they had no idea of how to farm in the new soil.
The soil was alot different than the soil in england. Which threw them of because they couldnt get anything to grow. With them not knowing how to farm they would start to run out of food. On top of all the other problems they had not having food would of had to been one of the worst.
With the water they had it really was hard to survive. The water had organisms in the in it that would give the settlers bad life threatening diseases. If a settler had cought a disease they were not likely to survive with the lack of modern medicine. Water is a very vital thing for survival so not having good water was catastropic.

The reason everything was going good for them had left. John smith had a peace with the indians. Pocahontas would bring food for the colonists as long as john smith was there. Which led to the starving times.
But eventually the starving time ended which left the colonists with only sixty. Then John Rolf would come over and find a new way to cure tobacco. John Rolf ended up marring which Pocahontas would help the colonists form a long lasting peace with the indians. The colonist had come so vary close to failing they probobly would have failed if it werent for the

In 1607 King James of England issued a royal charter to colonize America. They built a fort around the Chesapeake Bay and named it Jamestown in honor of their king. The region of the Chesapeake they were settling on was already home to over 20,000 Algonquian Indians. Their leader, Powhatan, immediately confronted the new English settlers asking them to establish an alliance. Powhatan believed that he could stat a valuable trade with the English and also help support them as they begin to settle. The Jamestown colony began to go down hill, they started to rely so much on the Algonquians for supply’s that they became unable to support themselves. Jamestown became so dependent on the Algonquian stores that John Smith and his men went out and attacked and raided other surrounding Indian villages for food and other supply’s. Powhatan realized that al the English came for was to invade and take their land, not to trade with them. So Powhatan decided to starve the colonists. During the winter 1609-1610 large amounts of colonists in the Jamestown settlement starved and a number of them resorted to cannibalism. Out of the 900 colonists that had been sent to Virginia to settle it, only 60 remained. The English however were determined to keep the colony going. The Virginia company sent more men, women, children, and livestock to the Jamestown colony. This time they were prepared to fight Powhatan and his tribe. Because the new colonists were prepared to fight and to help themselves with farming and trading they turned the colony’s failure to success. In 1613 the colonists had firm control over the areas between the James and York rivers. The Algonquin Indians were so rundown from all the warfare and disease, they became forced to sign a peace treaty with the English. The English now started to grow bigger and bigger. They introduced tobacco production. This became a very merchantable commodity. The English started out relying on the Indians to do everything for them, and they…

The raids, ordered by a capable leader, John Smith, played a major role in deteriorating the harmony between the two settlers. The winter of 1609, known as “the Starving Time” marked another step to disharmony. The native Indians, infuriated by the constant raids and other hostile actions by the English colonists, monopolized all the food supplies in the wood and enclosed the colonist in their palisade. The colonists had to find anything edible such as snakes, dogs, cats and rats in order to maintain their lives.…

The water became a major problem for the colonists because it was not fresh water; it was a harsh mixture of saltwater and freshwater enough to do some damage. This was also known as brackish water. The colonists tried to dig wells for fresh water, but these were subject to drought, and/or saltwater intrusion. Especially, with droughts it caused poor corn crop to grow. Droughts are a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, or a shortage of water resulting from this. From that you can tell that if it were too dry, or never rained much it’d be a problem, for crops to grow. This also led to the problem of early colonist, dying of starvation, and/or hunger. (Doc B) According to Caviler Earle, what happened to human waste that got dumped into the river was fester, or in other words flushed away. Since the colony dumped all of their waste in the water source, it became even more toxic as the weeks passed, and could have also contributed to disease. (Doc A) The headcount began to rapidly drop, and several of the deaths were caused by saltwater poisoning. In general most of the water was not healthy for colonist. It seems water was an important factor in the hardship of the colony, but it is not the only one.…

The English who founded Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent settlement, came with the intent of finding gold and getting rich by trading with the Indians. As a result of the settler's eagerness for money, they failed to think about the location on which they chose to settle, the swamp. This geographic condition started the colony off to a negative start. The southern colonies did however, have a warm climate, swamps, and thick rich soil. None of the original settlers of the Southern colonies were use to working; therefore they had no food to eat. When John Smith, a key leader in keeping Virginia alive, said to his colonists "No work, no food the colonists took control and began a new life. As a result of the location of Jamestown, many…

The biggest reason Jamestown was so unsuccessful, was because of the undesirable population. In document C, the ship list shows that there were 47 gentlemen, which are people who don't usually work with their hands. Gentlemen couldn't help the people of Jamestown do anything and Jamestown only had a couple handymen, like carpenters. Also they didn't have farmers, so they had to rely on the animals around them or the Indians. Since the colonists didn't have enough skilled workers and too many gentlemen, this made it difficult to get food and…

The colonists who came to Virginia met the Powhatan Indians, who helped the colonists out a little bit. The colonists might of died from diseases. This might of been because the colonists would dump their waste into the river, thinking that it would wash out to the ocean, but instead, the tides pushed the dirty water and extra salt water up to the "clean" drinking water. If the water was contaminated, their irrigation system and wells would be full of the "brackish" water, which would kill the colonists. "Brackish" water means dirty or unclean water. There was only one surgeon for 100 men, and if people needed surgeries, the surgeon probably doesn't wash the tools, so germs are being passed on from one person to another. They also probably didn't have enough medicine or the right kind of medicine. So out of all of these reasons, the colonists probably died mostly of…

The Jamestown colony was located near present day James City County, Virginia. Jamestown was the first permanent settlement by the English in what is in current day known as the United States. The location of Jamestown was selected primarily for the fact that it provided a favorable defensive location against any other foreign powers that may have tried to gain control of the colony. John Smith, Robert Hunt along with others provided inspirational leadership for the colonists but even so starvation became a very apparent problem. The hostile relations with the local Native American people and a lack of any profitable exports only made matters worse. Despite this and a horrible winter bearing down on them, the colonists persevered. At the end of the first winter only 60 of the original 214 English colonists survived. (jamestown virginia) The settlers who came over on the initial three ships were not well-equipped for the life they found in Jamestown. In addition to the “Gentry” who was not accustomed to manual or skilled labor, they consisted mainly of English farmers who were not prepared physically or emotionally for the problems that would face them. (old and sold antique digest) Yet despite this they persevered and worked as a team to establish a colony. However, when two ships, crudely constructed in Bermuda, arrived at the settlement with no supplies, when the colonists desperately needed supplies the most, the settlers packed up and abandoned…

Narrowing it down some settlers (gentlemen) did not know how to work with their hands. Others did not know how to farm. They also lacked a numerous amount of labourers. Not to mention, no one thought of adding women to the colony (Doc.C). there is not a high chance of survival if you have an insufficient amount of labourer. Without the labourers building and working, the civilization would be a complete flop. They are relying on the labourers, but 12 labourers (Doc.C) is not enough. Without the presence of farmers, you are unable to efficiently gain crops. Without farmers, you have a limited amount of food. Without enough food - you will die. As well, they brought people with occupations that are completely unnecessary. For example, the original settlement brought a drummer and a barber (Doc.C). There are no logical reasons that a drummer and a barber will help the colony survive. Furthermore, the amount of gentlemen they brought is absurd. The Virginia Company brought 47 gentlemen - that were not used to working with their hands. Which makes them useless because they could not get anything done. Bringing people that can not survive in the wilderness is definitely one way to…

One of the reasons on why many colonists died was because of the diseases. In Document A, it states "...disease in the early years to Jamestown's position at the salt-freshwater transition, where filth introduced into the river tended to fester rather than flush away." This means when the tides rose, human waste would soak into the river and contaminate it. This caused the disease because the colonists would use the brackish water for drinking, bathing, and to wash their personal belongings. If one of the colonists…

Plantation or harvest was very difficult for Smith and the Colonists because due to their late arrival, the crops wouldn’t grow because of the incorrect weather. Because plantation became difficult, food wasn’t as accurate as it could have been because the crops would simply not grow and this caused starvation. Some of the Natives helped Smith with food because he taught them about how the Earth works. The Native Americans were such good people towards the Englishmen but Smith still called them savages. “The patron of all good endeavors, in that despite extremity so changed the hearts of the savages that they brought such plenty of their fruits and provision, as no man wanted.”…

When referring to those starving in the Jamestown colony, most have assumed that “all of these Virginia colonists were men” (Bernhard, 1992, pg. 600). Bernhard’s article focuses on the thought that many details were left out simply because of the failure to account for information overlooked. Bernhard found that the often overlooked piece of information involving the women and children had explained why Jamestown came out to be successful. If it were not for the women and children, “Jamestown might have been abandoned, and the history of successful English colonization in North America might not have begun in 1607” (Bernhard, 1992, pg.…

The developments that showed the colonies trying to apply the lessons are John Smith kept peace with the Indians by trading with them. When John Smith had to return to England the colonists failed at learning from Smith they stopped trade thus resulting in an abundance of death. Another factor that contributed to the failure of the colony was the poor leadership and the ill prepared people. According to ship lists a little over a third of the first people to arrive were gentlemen who were not accustomed to manual labor and did not contribute much.(Doc C) People who were not prepared to do manual labor necessary to the colony were detrimental because they were using food and space that could have been put to better use.
