Being petrified to accomplish a dream is what haunts myself from trying to succeed. Finally figuring out what to do with my life was the beginning of a turning point for me, now it was time to follow through that dream and go to college. As I stated in the previous paragraph, a lot of the world today thinks money is the true sign of success and my mom and dad we’re firm believers in that. I figured that they wouldn’t be proud of their son because he wants to write for a living. “If you didn’t have a career as a businessman or something else that’s high paying we think of you as a failure” was always something I would expect my dad would say to me. Which is why college at the time was not my main priority for me once high school was over. The

All those conversations make me feel down and discouraged. Months later I came SLCC to take a placement test, getting a low score put me into depression. My mom asked what was the matter. Now college is like a new turning point for people who have just graduated out of high school and students are very bias about going to college or not. So I think they should go straight into the work force and there are some reasons why student don’t go to college. Students don’t want to go to college because maybe they think of it as a waste of time and that they have no need to go to another school to learn a specific course for 4 years and that they can do it themselves. For examples some artist in the music industry didn’t go to college like J Cole or Rihanna didn’t study music just to be an artist. Some animators are pros just from teaching themselves instead of learning it at colleges. Another reason would be that some…

I’m the kind of guy who doesn’t like to sit in traffic; I’m the kind of guy that could sit in the cockpit of a plane and go high speed where falling isn’t an option because once you fall you can’t get up. As I a child all of could think of was being successful because growing up living in east Harlem you saw the people that weren’t going anywhere in life and you see where that got them in life. Growing up I have saw people not finish school and people who were in school for a very long time to get one degree. Many people in my family have either not graduated or still in college my aunt for example took her about six years to finish a two year degree because she constantly messed up and stop going to school and when back and procrastinated…

It’s easy to make a goal rather than to achieve it. However, with determination one can succeed in accomplishing it. I have accomplished one of many goals in my list and that's to attend college. In my family not a lot attended college or even finished high school, so accomplishing this goal is a big subject of matter to my family.Getting this far is even a big accomplishment in my eye’s, especially when you break free from an assembly line of generations that never had attended college. The feeling is still overwhelming, mainly because I’m the first of many generations in my family to accomplish something big like…

Growing throughout elementary and middle school up to about 8th grade I was always told I had potential. I always did decent in school, you know typical smart kid who doesn't put forth 100% effort all the time unless deemed necessary or interested. But up till I got to high school and grew older I began being faced with harder and way more challenging tasks inside the classroom. Society tends to believe that attending to college is something that everyone should do in order to live a successful and prosperous life. After doing research about the benefits of college, read different perspectives and opinions of different authors my view about college has changed. A lot of kids think that in order to get accepted into college you need to have perfect test scores and an exceptional gpa but that’s not true. Angel B. Perez in the article, Want to Get Into College? Learn to Fail, asserts that college admission officers want to get to know the student applying outside of his/her academic history. That means that if you are eager to learn you can get into college and by attending to college you are going to expand your mind, gain more knowledge and be a successful person.…

I was the kind of guy who always strove in order to get the highest grades but yet hadn’t decided what to do in the future. I wasn’t worried, I knew someday I would find something in what I was good at. I got to live with that thought for some time until I got to attend middle school, where I stopped worrying about my grades and managed only to pass the subjects. I spent most of my time sleeping due to the frustration of not knowing what to do in the future. Most of my middle school experience was tasteless. I hadn’t friends at all, and teachers used to discourage their students about their future. “You're not going to college, you’ll not be able to do it because you’re poor” used to say, Mrs. Vazquez, the math teacher who instead of giving her class, talked on how much his son had accomplished in college and how we would not be able to attend. That was about to change.…

“You’ll never make it,” they all said, my boyfriend, family, teachers, and friends. It was like my life was already figured out for me, as if I didn’t have a say. The message was loud and clear. They all expected me to fail, to settle for a minimum wage paying job, to settle for just a high school diploma. For a while I went around believing that all I could do was the minimum required. But then I realized that I was capable of doing so much more. As time went on I realized that I did not have to live up to other’s low expectations and I started making a name for myself. I knew that studying a little harder for every test, joining clubs, volunteering, and running for leadership positions would later pay off.…

What sets my story apart from many is that my goals never changed despite such difficult odds. Yes, I had to stop and start a few times, but my drive to succeed in terms of my education never wavered. There are a lot of people that start school, stop and then move into a career or trade, with school far from their minds. Not me. My parents dreamed of me finishing and I’ve always wanted to be a pharmacist, so our dreams intersected and the culmination is my continued path to finish college and be successful. There isn’t a roadblock big enough to block my path now; as an older and wise student with a life full of exceptional cultural, educational and life experience behind me, I am well on my way to accomplishing those same goals I set for myself so many years…

What does college success me to me? To me it means a lot of things such as graduating with at least a B average without dropping out or failing any of my classes but most importantly it means that I walked away with something important. If you fail, you are still successful as long as you know that you tried your best, and did whatever it took to get there even if you didn’t fully succeed. Success is getting everything you want or need in life by working your hardest and trying your best and not doing anything meaningless. Success to me is getting everything you want or need in life by working your hardest and trying your best. When all the goals that I had set for myself have been fulfilled, then I can say that my time at college was truly a success. College success means to me more than just grades in college, it also means that I used my time wisely and took my education seriously, trying the hardest I possibly could, and being productive. Trying to get as much knowledge I can get out of it so I can apply it to day to day issues or work being done . You gain experience in a lot of different stuff. You want to know what your field contains and you want to have the full college experience. The reason I why I am attending college here at NOVA is because so I can get a good education and a transfer to 4 year college to finish my college education. While I am getting an education, I want to obtain a degree so I can be able to obtain a good paying job that I know and will enjoy doing for the rest of my life. That is my take on college…

Starting at eight years old, I always envisioned attending college and obtaining a degree that would allow me to accomplish what I want in life. Over time, I have faced many obstacles such as dyslexia, emotional trauma, and family challenges. All through these challenges, I never let anything deter me from my course of attending college. Despite being able to overcome obstacles, I have come to realize there are things in life that I have little to no control over. Now that I have had time to experience the joys, hard work, and endless opportunities that come with being a college student, I have come too far to let anything stop me from finishing this chapter of my life. In combination with my scholarships and work-study, as a college student with little money I rely partly on my parents to finance my education. Although my parents will continue to do all they can to help finance my education, their income stability is not guaranteed, my family…
